What if Holland returned in Halo 4? It was never confirmed he died, he was last known to be in New Alexandria, i think it is most likely he escaped the planet and survived to command more squads against the Covenant.
Just in case you dont know who Holland is.
Colonel Urban Holland was the commanding officer of Noble Team during the Fall of Reach. He did not experience any combat during the battles (presumably) and was the one who gave clearence and orders to Noble Team. He was code-named “Noble Actual” and was the final word when it came to Noble’s decisions (next to power-hog ONI of course). He was last known to be in New Alexandria and as far as we know, he was either killed on Reach, or escaped the planet. I think he escaped and might just make it into Halo 4.

Well during the level where you find Halsey in the underground base (forgot what level it was called) she mentions that “Holland is out of commission” this is either euphemism for he’s dead or ONI doesn’t know as well.

or maybe it means hes no longer in danger. But i completely forgot about her mentioning that.

Just load up the eight level I think in campaign. Just before Noble team enters the door to the lift that and they realize that Halsey will be giving orders from now on instead of Holland

yah now i remember. The Package. ive only seen that cutscene twice, and the first time my brother was chatting away in my ear and i didnt even hear what they were saying.

I always thought she meant his authority has been over-ridden rather than he’s dead or missing.

I’d like it if he returned. He wasn’t given enough attention in Reach’s story. He didn’t even have a character model, just a little “profile picture”. He could be helping trian the Spartan IVs as he’s worked with Spartans before.
Also, Halsey says this on the package:
“Colonel Holland will be briefed. You belong to ONI now.”
So it seems as if he’s still alive, at least during that mission.

Yeah, it seemed to me that Halsey was simply stating her present authority over Holland. It is highly possible that he escaped from Reach. He could have even tracked Noble 3 (Jun)'s location to Castle base and sent in an evac squad to evacuate the remaining civillians and Spartans from the Planet. Halsey stayed behind at castle base because she was too stubborn to accept an escape from Holland and then was rescued by John.
