Collision Worse Than Ever

Playing recently and noticed that collision is abysmal since the update. You simply will not run into another player–my recent captures are brimming with people sliding directly through each other in close quarters and then doing the wild melee dance.

Anyone else noticed this?

I love fighting someone way better than me only for him to phase through me, and I jump and watch him spinning around in circles trying to see where I am. Then I get a cheap melee. Moments like that is when you just have to tbag.

Yea it’s dumb. Happens at least once a match to me, so probably like 10+ times per match total in standard 4v4.

Servers and desync are definitely worse since the update.

Yup & then combine this with a missed melee (that (probably) should’ve connected) - it happens maybe once every other game or so for me.

Ah, so thats why the person that I’m trying to melee always seems to disappear and hit me in the back…

I thought player-to-player collision has never worked. I’ve never seen it work, it’s consistent.

In my experience, collision has never worked.

We shouldn’t be phasing through anybody, friend or foe.

This is one core mechanic of the game that totally destroys the way the game plays. Along with lag and desync, it compounds the problem. It’s still stutters etc.

It’s this stuff, the basic gameplay that we should be concerned with, not stupid reach cosmetics etc.

This game still plays the worst out of any Halo. A year later and they get praised for recycled cosmetics, when the core game is still broken.

I was under the impression lack of player collision was a feature rather than a bug…

Still don’t like it, mind

Yeah, collision has always been a bit messed up. But for whatever reason, it’s happening multiple times a game now. I’m starting to actively alter my playstyle to account for the fact that getting too close to someone results in a glitchy mess.

Also, server performance in general seems poorer and quitting is -rampant- in Ranked, which doesn’t appear to adjust CSR gain/loss for quitters which is hilarious.

But we can focus on player collision.

Nah, you’re supposed to collide with enemy players.

You sure about that? I’ve literally never collided with another player (friend or enemy?

Yeah, I’m really confused about this. I have been playing Halo Infinite since before it was launched and I’ve literally never collided with another player, and I’ve never noticed two other players colliding. And this has been true regardless of team or opponent status.

The exception is that if one or both of them melee at the right time, then it is sort of like a collision, because one hits the other, causing some knock back.

Are you saying players sometimes collide rather than phase through each other? Do you have any video evidence?

One of the largest polls on the Halo Infinite forum showed that 90% want traditional collision (like every previous Halo) but 343 then called that “mixed” feedback and did nothing. That is how 343 responds to feedback.

I’m not saying players don’t want collision, but a poll on this forum is not a good way to take a representative sample feedback, even if you only care about the opinions of big Halo fans. There’s aot of Halo players that don’t use these forums and instead use things like Reddit or other more niche community sites.

Okay, so I found this year old video showing player collision between opposing team members. I have never noticed this happening before, but maybe I just have never had a clearly observable instance happening to me or in front of me. I’ll have to try it out the next time I see an opponent idling. So apparently collision definitely is not enabled (or doesn’t work) for allies, but it’s supposed to work with enemies, but is broken?

This sentiment was all over the place (Reddit, Twitter, etc.) when the game first came out. And 343 did nothing. And people are still complaining about the problems it causes. Nobody likes getting one hit back-smacked from the front.

Basically this.

The player model for collision with enemy players is cone shaped from top to bottom instead of block shaped, which makes it impossible to stand on their head. This means their upper body is narrow creating more of a soft collision, which is why it feels like you are often sliding right through them. It was speculated this was designed like this because there were too many hang-ups when using the grappleshot but who knows…

I know people were complaining about the collision since the beginning, but I thought they were complaining about the lack of (consistent) collision, I didn’t know that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. I thought it never worked consistently, and that was reinforced by my experience, but maybe I have just never noticed instances where collision does happen…I the heat of battle.

Oh, that grappleshot explanation sounds plausible. It wouldn’t be fun to use grapple shot if you always got blocked by enemy players. I can’t wait to test this out with an idle player. I feel like it has it has to be done in matchmaking in order for me to make valid conclusions.

The cone-shaped collision body would make a lot of sense. I could see that could make it feel buggy and inconsistent, even if it was behaving as designed.

They should probably just disable player collision only when grappling, or really, I would say in the first few frames of grappling. It makes gameplay sense if you can grapple something, and initially be immune from getting caught up on players when leaving the ground, but it would be fun if people could collide with you once you were fully mid-flight of the grapple.
