College

Hello,
I have some questions about what it takes to work at 343 Industries. I’ve tried to look for contacts but I couldn’t find any information, i’ll also try sending a letter later today. I’m a college student and I was wondering what majors are the best in order to get into designing games. Game Design, Computer Science, and Art Design are all options. I was just curious on what step employees have taken to get into the gaming industry, if it’s through college, having experience, or just working your way up.
-Thank you!

From those I’ve seen on twitter it’s a huge mix of different things and it really depends what area you want to work in. The programming is obviously very important for the nuts and bolts of engine development and software engineering, there’s obviously huge opportunities for those with a design and art background. There’s also community, communications, marketing etc and even game testing. There’s a huge amount of interdisciplinary fields involved.

In addition to what Morsey says, I would start following 343 employees on Twitter and connecting with them there. I’ve been able to also talk to some who went to the HCS Lans as well and networking would help too. Others also play and are involved in communities like Forgehub.

If you are serious about this then a great thing you can do is search for careers at Microsoft. From here you can search for “Halo” or “343” there a lots of different job listings for 343 Industries. So you can see the job duties, experience, as well as the degrees of a variety of roles. This will give you an idea of the baseline of what the hiring teams are looking.

So my advise to you is to figure out what your passion is and really double down on that. Don’t waste your time on something you think is better to get into games if you don’t have as much love for it. From there just learn as many tools and gain as much practical experience you can get in either art or programming. Building a strong portfolio along with education and proven experience such as internships will really help you focus in on your goal.

P.S
Also look into indie game development and working on game jam projects with other students/devs. If you have seen game dev projects to completion you will stand far above anyone who just has a computer science degree with no real experience. Good Luck!
