Cobras

I have a quick question: what is the best strategy to utilize cobras as an offensive unit? I’m well aware of camping choke points with a cobra-wolverine combo, but I have never heard much in regards to using cobras as an offensive unit

That’s because they’re not an offensive unit. If you manage to set them up near your opponent’s base and snipe at it they do a lot of damage, but it’s not really practical, as chances are they’ll get killed while you’re moving them in.

I’ve never found Cobras to be all that useful. I tried setting them around my bases in a Skirmish game versus Heroic AIs, and they pretty much got rolled over by Wraiths and Locusts. Did do quite a bit of damage before they got blown up.

The answer is actually pretty simple: Don’t build cobras by themselves. Ever.

They are meant to supplement your army or to be used defensively in choke points. You need scorpions and wolverines to go along with them. Set them up and then initiate a fight with your scorpions within the cobra range and use the wolverine’s volley and grenade launchers to do damage in the mid ground between the scorpions and the cobras, all the while the cobras dish out tons of damage. This works best when assaulting a position the enemy can’t just retreat from, or to force them to retreat.

You have to work on your multi-tasking and micromanaging skills before you can pull this off ok though because they are very clunky when it comes to mobility.

Fixed. Unless you are turtling don’t build them, map/playlist is immaterial tanks are a better option in every scenario bar turtles.

Actually I’ve seen a few top tier generals use exclusively cobras with lethal offensive capacity.

Essentially they broke there cobras up into 2 groups and basically “leap frogged” their way forward until they reached my base. 1 group (in lock down) would cover the advancing group, which would then lock down. Then the group in the rear would unlock and move forward having the locked down group in the front providing cover. Even against grizzlies this proved surprisingly lethally effective, as often times my vehicles remained out of range thanks to the (sniping) lock down units who would have protection from the mobile cobra units.

The main problem with this is that it requires a lot of discipline to execute correctly, and it’s useless against air units.

In 1v1 build air, proceed to win and laugh at the guy doing this.

In 2v2 and 3v3, if they have enough anti-air then just use more mobile units and base race. It’ll take them far more time to get anywhere on the map compared to hogs or tanks, so just out base them and don’t actually directly engage them.

On some maps with little distance between bases, I’ve had success pumping out a few Cobras alongside a surprise surge of upgraded Marines and putting pressure on the enemy base.

Situations like that don’t happen very often, but when you pull it off on someone who doesn’t see it coming it feels awesome lol.

Exactly. Cobras are long range artillery and are best used for cannon fire on the enemy base. Protect them with whatever counter the enemy has on the field and just watch as their buildings slow melt to their shots.

My later post recommending that you simply never build them except for turtling (not a legitimate game) is more appropriate. That first post of mine was poorly worded.
