Coatings wouldn't be as bad if they had customizable color channels

For reference, check out how Warframe does skin customization. They still have unique textures while also still allowing you to color parts how you want.

Honestly I was hoping coatings would be a color or camouflage scheme that the user could edit the colors of, where colors would still be interchangeable but would appear in different order or patterns with depending on the coating selected. That way users could still change colors with the added bonus of being able to edit HOW they appear to their liking.

It’s hard for me to explain so I’ll just list an example;
The Scorpion Punch coating, allow users to change the colors or textures that appear whether it be a regular color shade or splinter camo for one channel, and so forth.

Because with the way armor coloring/coating works now, I can’t get the combinations I want in the pattern that I want them, and have to just pray 343 releases something close enough to what I envision. Hell I can’t even change the colors in the first place!

This is one of my biggest irritations. EVERY Halo game before this let us choose the colours of our armour. Usually with 2-3 colour sections. Exception being CE but that was the first game and was limited by technology of the day.

This new setup, is terrible. Like a lot of the “customization” in this game. I use quotes because it’s a farcical claim. I agree with you, it should be a camo pattern of sorts or different colour areas for the armours that we unlock. Let us have full control of what colours our Spartans have. Otherwise it just messes with our Spartan’s identity that we’ve setup over years of Halo.

EXACTLY i hate this so much

The easiest fix, would be to allow for individual coatings to apply to each armour piece.

Say you like the orange Scorpion Punch arm but want the rest to be blue?
Fine, apply the blue armour coating from the usual slot. Then inside the right shoulder, and gloves menus, you could select the Scorpion coating.

Is it a perfect solution, no. But it would;

A) Give us the ability to customise each section of armour. Even with the existing coatings, the number of variations would be huge. But 343 could throw a few new colours as a good will gesture.

B) It doesn’t seem like it would be that big of a change to implement. Granted I’m not a developer, but the game already knows what coating your Spartan’s armour should be, it see no reason splitting areas up (like Destiny) should be that much more of a tax on the system. And they could always implement it in phases, like helmet first, then shoulders a couple weeks later, etc.

C) It wouldn’t effect 343’s current business model as far as coatings and other sales are concerned. People would still buy them, but they would now have more freedom with how to use them. Heck, I bet it would increase sales, as more players would be likely to pick them up given the extra freedom.

Everybody wins.

The thing that caught my eye: 343 said coatings are like 7 layers of color, material, wear and tear and so on.

ALL armor coatings are exactly the same apart from color. If you cycle through them and keep your eye on any specific mark/scratch you can see it is present in every coating…

So there literally was no reason to get rid of primary and secondary colors apart from “money please”
