Dunno why everyone has latched onto Warframe as the model company. It had elements when it launched that required payment to access skill elements. Literal pay to win.
I get their cosmetic system is potentially better, but at what cost? I’m not sacrificing gameplay for cosmetics.
We already technically did with this FTP system to begin with, so dont say we didnt pay a cost already, thats just deluding yourself.
and while Req packs were bad in Halo 5, you could still earn them through playing the game properly, not through a BP system that you have to pay for and keep, or play in the season and loose access to, we already payed enough by going FTP, all im asking for is a compromise thats better than this, because what we have is frankly abysmal in the long run.
Do not sugar coat it by hilighting the example as having negatives, at that point all products have a negative to them, we just have to choose the ones we want to accept in order to bring about an arguably better system, thats the way it is.
it also helps that warframe has been around for a long time, sooooo…they couldve looked from there for influence with the customisable monetisation, just saying.
again we already payed the cost Ken, might as well find a good example for compromise and warframe is the best example of that compromise that i can think of off the top of my head in the same genre of live service ftp games, let alone being in the same genre setting wise, that being sci-fi.
I was absolutely disgusted by the coatings system when it was announced and my overall sentiments towards it haven’t improved dramatically since, but it is the way 343i decided to handle color customization in this game.
There are some cool coatings, too. I actually really like the different lusters and sheens, patterns (especially camoflage), etc. that they make possible.
I think the ultimate tragedies of coatings are that none of them are actually unique, and that only a small handful of them are free and accessible to every player.
Those two factors are somewhat addressable without having to nix the coatings system altogether (because, again, that isn’t happening).
If 343i allowed players to mix and match their available coatings to specific slots in the “wheel” and/or to apply specific coatings to different parts of their armor, that would immediately fix the issue with players not being able to use truly unique color combos. That’d be a massive improvement, even for free players with a comparatively small swatch of coatings to use. It’d immediately make Infinite the most color-customizable Halo game of all time, by far.
Unfortunately, even with a fix like that, the coolest colors, textures, and patterns will likely always remain locked behind premium paywalls. That’s nothing to celebrate, but it’s unavoidable thanks to the F2P nature of the game. The days of all players having equal access to customize their armor colors are gone.
i never personally did that as i wasnt fond of the colour clash possibilities and preffered a more “uniform” look to my guardian, when i still played D2 at that point. this is a bias on my part. i will always preffer freedom of expression over preset combinations.
DOOM 2016 had a system like what im describing oddly enough, Anthem too.
I mean you can get a uniform look with multiple separate shaders it just depends on the colors you’re going for example i was going for a pink and light blue look with a dash of black and with the shaders i mentioned above i was able to
This is slightly off topic but does anybody else think that we should be able to have multiple customization slots for weapons and armour in infinite like there is in warframe? If we have to stick with the coating system, I at least want to have more than one appearance for any given weapon or armour set.
Ken, you can go through the entire game without paying a dime and have nearly every item in game. It’s not a pay to win and gameplay isn’t sacrificed for cosmetics. I have booked enough time on Warframe to know what I’m talking about. The game might not be perfect and has it’s fair share of haters, but it’s managed to stick around for nine years because the devs actually listen to the community and they actually patch bugs in a timely manner.
I’m just saying there’s no real good answer to FTP games. A cost comes somewhere.
People don’t like the cosmetic cost, but the benefits are also huge in other departments. Offering palettes would reduce money they make, almost guarantee of that. Is it worth it for what they get back? Almost definitely not.
It also helps that Warframe has a system that allows for platinum to be gained without needing to spend a dime, though in a Looter-esque game like warframe it is done via trading.
For Infinite we need a reward ellement for the currency itself, maybe 50 credits per weekly reward or something, just a means to get currency that allows us to do something. or hell have it be tied to the dailies, every 5 daily challenges you finish you get X amount of credits.
the overall cost in Warframe is circumvented by the ability to not need to buy platinum. if you want to you can, but an alternative does exist.
Real slow grind but reward regular playtime. What you lose in money, you gain in population health. More players, more opportunities to sell expensive bundles.
Unless you’re using the worse looking armor pieces,
Or using Seasonal coating that no one has access to anymore, (Because it was a shop exclusive.)
I literally do not believe you,
There are only a handful of really good armor coatings in the game, everything else is lukewarm bathwater.
So many people will look the same, you can tell really basic stuff about them.
HC Coating in basic Mk7 - Just got the game.
Default Grey Spart Mk7 - Probably a Hacker
Cat Eats - 343i Shill
Any of the Reach Armors - Bungie Fans
Yaroi - F2P player since Launch
Zeta Helmet - A Deranged Sociopath who shouldn’t be allowed near children.
Gold and Red Christmas Coating - A P2P Whale with no concept of self control.
You being unique with such a limited creative space is frankly near impossible.
Mark Vii Core.
Zeta Sky armour coating.
Mark V Zeta helmet.
Bell Toll visor.
Clonely Bear chest.
UA/Agathius shoulders.
Capaxx gloves.
No wrist.
No utility.
UA/Type DP kneepads.
Onyx Signum S2 emblem.
Perfect Sublimity armour effect.
Enlightened path movement effect.
Have seen one person with the same coating and chest combo.
All 343 needs to do is give us the ability to change the colors on the coatings. If the coating is just the design/texture but the colors were still completely up to you I feel that’d be the best way forward.
These are all fantastic view points and Ken isn’t wrong, that perhaps the system will change in the future but we all still have to demand some kind of change or nothing is coming.
Destiny kept preset colors and styles by allowing the pallets unlocked everywhere and for single items. Head chest leg arm class. If we can at least manipulate the wheels colors people would be so happy. Switch to pallets, open them up in its own UI.
If they truly cared about expression then doing so would allow players to also share these new designs and allow 343 to sell special materials at easily 500 credits a SINGLE material/pattern. Fair considering.
I understand this will take coding time and a lot of smashing against a wall but not one single halo released by 343 has had a completely solid customization system.
4 had a fantastic unlock system upgraded from 3 and reach’s commendation and leveling systems. It had patterns and specialty classes. Cool but unnecessary.
5 had an array of armors and got rid of the crappy undersuit problems, but dear God how horrible was it to be stuck in a preset?
Now infinite has an array of armors… Kinda? Cores? Which is kinda cool? Especially once we get cross core yay! But now… We face the issue… Of preset again.
In one way or another 343 has limited the ability of player expression slowly over time. Don’t even get me started on the whole elite thing. Regardless of gameplay feelings it did take away a whole side of the communities ability for self expression in the game.
Colors have been a means for humans to symbolize who they were and what they stood for. Wether alone or united a banner was only colorless when you had given up.
