Co-op Character Selection?

So after yesterday’s exciting reveal of the new co-op and squad command system that’s going to be implemented in ‘Halo 5’, I have a question…

Do you guys think the second/third/fourth players in your party will be able to select which Spartan they’ll be playing as?

I hope there will be a way for us to choose. Because if every character gets a loadout that is slightly different, it would be nice to be able to play as whoever caters to your own strengths and preferences. For example: it would be nice if the player on your team that’s the best sniper could choose to spawn as Linda-058 (who we now know always gets a sniper rifle), rather than it simply being assigned automatically. That way players can make the most of each unique loadout option.

That, and I think it would just be fun to be able to inhabit whichever character is your favorite when playing with friends. I would be kind of bummed to miss out on the chance to play as Kelly-087 just because I wasn’t queued in the party a certain way, or if there’s not enough players for a full team of four - and I’m sure there are plenty of people who feel the same about Fred-104, Buck, etc…

What do you guys think?

Hopefully choose, but will ultimately lead to squabbling for favourite character. Bring it on!

I certainly hope so, I would love to have a chance to play as Kelly-087, I always thought that she was very badass in the books.

Although in this situation, the appropriate team leader must be selected right?

Well, I’d imagine that whoever’s “Player 1” or “Party Leader” would have to play as MC or Locke as a default.

I thought the GI article confirmed we could pick? Maybe I misread I wasn’t in my right state of mind yesterday though… But I would hope so I need more Linda.

So definitely not as Left 4 Dead as I thought it would be

OP. I agree that being able to select which player you want outside of party leader being MC does seem like a good idea.

Yeah that’s what I meant. The party leader/player one will be Chief/Locke just like how it’s always been in past games - but now with more unique companions it seems appropriate to give secondary players the option to pick who they want.

It doesn’t say about that one way or another unfortunately. :\ All it confirms is that they are playable and everyone has a slightly different loadout.

I have a hard time deciding which member of blue team I like best, so no worries here!

I’d hope 343 knows how fond we are of our individual Blue team members and that we would greatly appreciate being able to play as our favorite. But I guess we have to wait really.#TeamLinda

I feel it is kinda the leader’s loss though, especially if he excels at sniping and wants to use Linda.

That’s a good point. But the problem is someone has to be Chief/Locke for story reasons…so I can’t see either of them being an optional choice, particularly if/when your party has less than 4 people in it.

It’s partly for this reason I’m starting to suspect that the secondary characters will just be automatically dished out - that would make it “fair” I guess. But definitely less fun for people playing as a character who has a loadout incompatible with their play style. This especially applies to Kelly and Linda, whose primary weapons are suited for very specific combat distances and skillsets.

Yeah the fact we have two very skilled specialists on Blue Team does complicate matters a bit.
Can the same be said for Osiris?

The variance in weapon-range on Osiris isn’t as extreme as it is on Blue Team: Tanaka/DMR << long to mid range >> Locke/BR << mid to close range >>Buck/AR…Vale though does start with an SMG and a plasma pistol, that’s a pretty unique combination that could come in handy in certain situations, but only if you’re good with both those weapons. Which is again something that could be great if your party members could pick their preferred secondary character.

BTW What is up with the strange weapon combination for Vale? The plasma pistol seems so random lel.

Will Kelly have a speed boost?
