Climbing

A feature that would be cool to include in the game would climbable surfaces that could be scaled using you’re hands or your knife. This would be similar to the quick time events in halo 4s campaign. This could make for some really cool multiplayer maps that could have special locations that you could get to only by climbing. This would be possible by making specific parts of the maps climbable and others not climbable. By taking this a step further you could have players be able to grapple onto different parts of vehicles an go for a ride. For example the railings on the treads of the tank. This ability could be possible by holding down the melee button or somthing. I have had this idea for a while now so I thought that I would just put it out there.

Gravity Lifts already help get to high ground, No need for climbing.

A good litmus test to see if an idea is good for Halo is:

Does the player have to holster his weapon to do it?

If yes, then it’s not for Halo.

If no, then it might be for Halo.

Climbing is simply a more cumbersome method of achieving what features such as grav lifts, good map design and generous jump heights let you do organically. It’s better to not dedicate a game mechanic to such a specific area.

As for giving vehicles extra “unorthodox” passenger seats, it’s a good idea. People have been asking for similar features for a while now, hopefully it’ll finally make an appearance.

Chief climbed in the opening minutes of the Halo 4 campaign. Just saying.

I’m sorry guys, but turrets aren’t for Halo. After all you need to holster your weapon to use it.

I’m sorry guys, but vehicles aren’t for Halo. After all you need to holster your weapon to drive them.

I’m sorry guys, but CTF, Oddball, and Assault aren’t for Halo. After all, you need to holster your weapon to use them.

Maybe “take away the player’s ability to attack” would be a better description of what is not good for Halo gameplay.

it would only lower the skill gap. Skill jumps r great, like in Halo 2 when you had to crouch in mid air to get a little bit higher.
I think 343 knows not to codify Halo AGAIN…

Then the person climbing can still use their weapon.

  1. You holster your weapon for another weapon … Lol.

  2. Every vehicle in this game has some kind of weapon attached to it. The only one that doesn’t is the mongoose.

  3. Those are objective items. You shouldn’t be able to hold a weapon as you can quickly drop it … Unless for some reason a developer would take that option away for some super rad flagnum mechanic d00d.

To do what? Fire at the wall they would be staring at?

Quite obviously not what I intended, but sure, why not? They still have the ability to attack the wall.

And please think your comment through, because if you say that the rule is now “take away the player’s ability to fight the enemy”, then my next answer will be obvious.

He said holster your weapon, you’re holstering it, aren’t you?

Try shooting from the driver’s seat of the Warthog.

You do realize I was picking at his terrible definition of what is and isn’t good for Halo, right?

Well, please state the obvious then.

.

It’s hard, but it’s not impossible. But I’m sure 9/10 times someone would go for the turret on the back before they go into the passenger side.

> You do realize I was picking at his terrible definition of what is and isn’t good for Halo, right?

Actually no I didn’t. More questionable opinions have been said on this forum by people who were dead serious.

Then they can turn around while climbing and shoot.

Really, could you not see that coming?

…wat?

Coming from the forum where people could never realize that Shootin Sammy was a troll, and even the mods banned me for warning people he was flamebaiting, I’m not surprised.

> …wat?

I don’t know how to say it any Clearer. Why would someone go into the passenger seat when they could to into the turret in the back of the warthog.

> Coming from the forum where people could never realize that Shootin Sammy was a troll, and even the mods banned me for warning people he was flamebaiting, I’m not surprised.

Lol, so true.

the issue is, as Randy says, that Halo is ususally about not ever putting you in a state where you can’t freely attack, unless you’re entering into a turret or vehicle, in which case you’re accepting a short period of vulnerability in exchange for soon becoming more powerful.

This is why climbing is often done through convenient boxes/debris, so you can sill spin around and shoot at someone who might be sneaking up on you as you climb. Making those jumps and other skilljumps is a big part of halo, and allowing you to climb any surface could de-epmphasize that, not to mention making it hell for the level designers.

even if you could only climb at ledges, you’d still be locked into an animation that would force you to look forward for a second, and that kinda goes against what Halo is. the only way to fix it would be to get rid of the animation and make you just slide up, which makes no sense and would look weird.

I think a better solution is to use the thruster mechanic to give players a better chance to clear ledges that are almost high enough for them to reach with a normal jump.

> I don’t know how to say it any Clearer. Why would someone go into the passenger seat when they could to into the turret in the back of the warthog.

What I said was “Try shooting from the driver’s seat of the Warthog”. You cannot shoot from the Warthog while you are driving.
