Is there a way for 343 to fix this? Clearly they did not intend to have bloom on the pistol when fired semi-auto, but sometimes the game seems to think you are firing full-auto even when shooting semi-auto if you press the trigger too fast and don’t let the xbox trigger fully reset before pressing again. This leads a lot of people who think they are shooting semi-auto to still get large actual bloom, not just visual bloom.
I understand that 343 cannot remove the spread (defined as deviation from perfect center on a fully paced shot) due to technical reasons, but they have shown that bloom is fully in their control.
If fixing this bug means dropping full-auto for the pistol, I would be totally fine with that as nobody ever uses it anyways (because of the massive bloom!)

Is that actually true? When I pull semi-auto as fast as I can, the bloom goes nuts, at least visually. Anecdotally, it also feels like I can’t hit the broad side of a barn when this happens.

Yes, I recall it being in a bulletin a while back, but the bloom will go crazy when fired semi, however, it will have no effect on your shots hitting what so ever.
Ok so I tested this tonight. If you pull your trigger and make sure to fully release all the way before pulling again it will not bloom - all the bullets will land within the circle indicated by the reticle.
However, if you pull and don’t fully let the trigger reset before pulling again, the game seems to think that you are holding down the trigger and gives you the same bloom as in full-auto.
This is very annoying but having knowledge of it helps. You can still pull very fast and get the max semi-auto rate of fire, just have to make sure to let the trigger reset before pulling again. I would prefer to just ditch full-auto completely so as to avoid accidental bloom since nobody who knows what they are doing would ever use full auto anyways.

Most players don’t even know what bloom is, visual or physical, they still spam the trigger or hold it down without a care in the world.
People still use automatic, heck, I do at close range.
As for the glitch, it isn’t that noticeable for me, I haven’t seen it hinder my gameplay as of yet, although it is likely that they would need to do another Title Update to fix the issue.

You haven’t noticed it? Find that surprising…most of the vids you can see online as well as my own experience, you see the reticle bloom out all the time (way out, not just the visual bloom that they couldn’t eliminate) even though the players are obviously firing semi-auto.

You are confusing me here, I notice the visual bloom will ALWAYS expand out, but it will NOT affect your aim at all, the bullets should always stay inside the original circle that doesn’t bloom.
Also, the CE Magnum NEVER shot straight. Most fights, even in MLG, ended inconsistently anywhere between 5 and 8 shots. It’s “spread” was ALWAYS in a circle between the middle, and edge of the reticle (I had fun shooting walls once, and found this). It will ALWAYS shoot in a circle, never inside, or outside of it, ALWAYS along the edge.

Me and a few others over at ATGHalo dot com who are CE and CEA magnum lovers were fooling around with the Zero Bloom Magnum that MLG was using in their v6 settings, this is the type of magnum that you want, your shots hit exactly where u aim every time, more reflective of the true original CE magnum, however the catch is there is no way to make the ZB magnum a 3 shot kill without having either the sniper a 1 shot body kill or 1 grenade kill, we experimented with every damage resistant setting, weapon damage setting, heck we even tried to make it so we spawned with OS’s. Sadly 343 really dropped the ball and we are stuck with this ridiculously inconsistent magnum bloom.
> Also, the CE Magnum NEVER shot straight. Most fights, even in MLG, ended inconsistently anywhere between 5 and 8 shots. Except that the reticle was much smaller in CE, so the effect of the spread was drastically different. I also don’t remember the shots diverting from center more than a small amount (certainly not consistently hitting the outside part of the reticle). Perhaps you are referring to the effect of gravity in CE where shots consistently dipped with gravity so for distance shots using the bottom of the reticle was a preferred method of aiming (not random).
And this is besides the point - I’m not discussing spread at all, I’m talking about shots going OUTSIDE of the reticle. In CEA, if you fire in semi-auto very carefully one at a time, you will see that there is some slight visual bloom between shots but the shots all go inside the reticle. If you start jamming on the reticle very quickly, you will find that often the bloom starts going nuts and shots start going outside of the circle (try this against a wall).
Through testing, I’ve found that this happens when the R trigger is not allowed to fully reset before being pressed again. My theory is that when this happens, the game is confused and thinks you are shooting full-auto (which has been programmed to have bloom, consistent with the original CE magnum). Therefore, I think this is a bug that was not 343’s intention, so I’m trying to point it out so they can fix it.
If they fully intended to do this, then I would only say that was not how the CE magnum behaved so if they want a truly “classic” feel then they should eliminate it. Semi-auto shots, no matter how fast, should not have effective bloom, period.
> Most fights, even in MLG, ended inconsistently anywhere between 5 and 8 shots.
At most practical ranges, that’s due to the player missing. Optimizing kill time in Halo 1 is extremely tough. When I did some light and admittedly sketchy testing, it looked like base-to-base shooting on Hang 'em High, assuming perfect aim, would probably average somewhere from 4-5 shots per kill, and only rarely going over 7.
> It’s “spread” was ALWAYS in a circle between the middle, and edge of the reticle (I had fun shooting walls once, and found this). It will ALWAYS shoot in a circle, never inside, or outside of it, ALWAYS along the edge.
I might test this later, but… I haven’t seen it in my own testing, and I have no idea what you’re talking about. The Halo 2 shotgun behaves like that, and that’s (part of) why people view it with disgust to this day.

I’d actually like to see testing as to how extreme this effect is, because it might actually be consistent with Halo 1; Halo 1’s bloom is based on trigger hold time, not simply semiautomatic versus automatic. You do need to tap your shots lightly to eliminate the bloom.

Yeah, just keep in mind that this was spread while tapping the trigger. It starts to go everywhere if you hold it. But just stand about motion-tracker range from a wall and you will see the pattern after firing a clip or two.
Chances are the reason it was “half way” between the center of the reticle and the rim, is so that when you scope in, spread doesn’t change, it just always hits the rim of the reticle.

That’s very interesting, and would explain why extremely fast semi-auto shooting in CE was very slightly more inaccurate than fully paced semi-auto shooting since fast shooting often involved depressing the trigger again before it fully reset (simulating longer trigger hold time). If that’s the case, then 343 got the idea somewhat right but the implementation leaves something to be desired.
In CE, the difference between the fast semi-auto shooting and slowly tapping the trigger was minimal except perhaps at extreme distance. Shots certainly stayed within the reticle. The video you linked is a good reference for that.
In CEA, there could be someone standing right in front of you no more than the distance from the camo on Hang 'em High to the back wall, and when the bloom starts expanding there’s no chance of an accurate shot. Shots fly far outside of the reticle.
