Classic Forerunner Designs

Forerunner technology was highly cultivated and progressive. They managed to create solidified surfaces out of meticulous energy, construct a Halo-wide teleportation grid, and create and utilize a number of other advanced machinery. Their architecture is noted mainly for being large-scale and geometric in style, with a semi-triangular theme being the most commonly observed design. All of which are made from a special type of metal that resists deterioration, metallic-like crystal reinforced on a molecular level, and various types of stone. They were highly skilled at creating natural-looking habitats, such as those of the Halo rings, which tend to be very elaborate, with numerous extrapolations of the basic design of a construct appearing to be purely decorative. In addition, the structures were engineered to compliment the natural landscape, as opposed to the modern idea of replacing it.

Forerunner architecture distinguishes itself from Covenant structures in that they incorporate heavy use of geometric angles, usually at either extremely sharp degrees (as the Forerunner buildings are usually triangular), or at forty-five degree angles. Originally, the ideas and concepts on Forerunner structures and technology was that it would be sleek and curved to give it an advanced feel. However, Bungie wanted the structures to feel as if they could stand the test of time and redesigned them to be solid, monolithic, and temple-like. The smooth, near-organic design would later be adopted by the Covenant in their architecture.

Who misses these designs? I do.

It’s hard to say,as a veteran of the first halo game I started with that design so I may be a little biased. Some 343 forerunner designs I’m OK with, but others look too different from bungies oroginal design

I like the designs from both H2A and the HW2 cinematics, but I really don’t like the Forerunner designs in H4 or H5G.

My issue is that some of them look to Tron Legacy to me and like something that humans would build. My other issue is when the nerw style shows up in places it really shouldn’t, either in places we’ve already been in the Bungie era or build by Forerunner rates that wouldn’t use that style in canon.

Yeah that’s basically what I was getting at.I know they wanted to make it look so beyond anything humans can create, but by doing that, the structures in 4 and 5 look like another thing all together

Yeah… When Bungie was making Halo, it was hardcore Sci-Fi. But when 343 took over the games, it essentially became Sci-Fi fantasy instead. You can totally see this in the designs styles too.

Yeah, I can’t disagree with you there. For the most part, I love the Bungie titles, the first Halo Wars, and H2A. CEA was cool and had an amazing soundtrack, but I wish that 343 had stayed loyal to the classic designs and used BLUR like they did in H2A. H4 had a decent story, but it was way too serious and lacking a lot of the charm and humor that even Reach (Bungie’s most serious Halo title!) had. And H5G… Literally the only enjoyable parts were the Sangheilios missions and Blue Team’s first mission. As for the armor and vehicles changing in both H4 and H5G, I can accept it, but only in regards to the Covenant. I would’ve preferred for the 343 Elites to wear more tribal-like armor with straps, cloth, and war-paint. But they should’ve still looked like this. As for there ships and vehicles, I would’ve preferred to see retrofitted Covenant vessels like we saw in HW2. And finally, I would preferred the UNSC to still use their classic designs such as what we’ve seen in past titles instead of what we got from 343. UNSC Marines should be wearing armor (Like in H3, Reach, or H2A) not Kevlar. And MJOLNIR armor should looked like armor. Not like a harness with some extra bits.

The classic Forerunner artstyle certainly looks really good and a great example is the map Epitaph… or even Construct… hell, all maps in Halo 3 that take place in a Forerunner location is the perfect representation of the Forerunner artstyle. I don’t mind 343’s, but Bungie has better designs. Hopefully, the Forerunner artstyle in Halo Infinite is a hybrid between the two styles just like HW2.

I can at least tolerate and accept that.

I miss them, but I think it is impossible to see them again. With 343, the forerunners have returned. A lot of what they built moves… and is active again. In the original trilogy, those were supposed to be ruins and the forerunners, dead. The only thing I would like about this, is that from now on, it looks like in Reach, CEA and 2A, where you can see the original designs but they seem clean and shiny like time had not passed. I think it is the best for modern Halo. In Halo 4 and 5 they did not look bad, but they didn’t even closely resemble the forerunners.

Have you even seen the Halo Infinite trailer? Have you checked any analysis videos from professional lore YouTubers? I suggest Halo Cannon, you may have a surprise =)

I’m perfectly happy with the new designs and especially the lore behind them. It’s a very fun talking point. Despite common belief, Halo 5’s structures matched the original trilogy’s fairly well: they clearly intentionally tried to separate the different architecture based on rate of Forerunner.
