Classic armour skin (all armours)

So among the many armour sets available in Halo 5 are different skins to help diversify the sets. Some of these skins have forced third colours, some are simple, some are busy, some good, and some not so much. While I appreciate the effort that has gone into making these, I can’t help but feel that something is missing. Often the skins feel overdesigned, when all I really want is something that clearly displays both the armour and colours that I’ve chosen. Something like what we had in Halo 2 and 3.

To that end I feel like every armour set should have a classic or basic armour set, based on the colour set ups of Halo 2 and 3 (the thighs and forearms from 2, the shoulders from 3 and the helmets from both). Back then it was a simple setup, where the secondary colour areas followed the contours of the armour. I don’t know exactly how unlocking them would work, ideally I think it should unlock once you gain another version of that armour (that way we’re not increasing the random Req unlocks).

I’ve made some examples of how I think it could work. I’m not using them to say that this is the definitive way they should be or anything like that. Check them out if you want.

I was bit skeptical at how much of an impact your suggestion would have on armor appearance, but it I preferred it more so than a lot of the forced skins. Seems like something they could patch in.

Not really patchable at this point without a lot of retexturing if they were to make a new base set for each armour.

-EDIT- never mind this wouldn’t be that much work actually

Credit where credit is due however this is a fantastic idea and I duno why they could have just stuck with this.

This is good, hope 343 takes note

That’s the thing, the current skins add a lot of visual noise which can mask the natural outlines of the armour. I believe that’s a big part of why people think so many sets look the same (that and the coloured tech suits).

Really like the idea, but looking at your examples I fell like it looks a lot better on old armors

That’s probably due to the images I had to work with, at least to some extent. The old armours had a lot more references for me to work from when working out where the secondary colour would go.

Yeah I definitely think 343 needs to look over how they decide to skin certain armors. Every armor needs to have a basic version, like you said. Even pattern, no white marks. Then they can have all that uneven weirdness that they like to much in Halo 5 on the alternate skins. Sometimes its subtle. So it works. Other times it ruins the armor tbh.

Yeah, I feel like the Raijin armour has a pretty good mix of options available, especially compared to the other sets.

Yeah it just disappoints me when you see armor sets like Fred’s that only have uneven skins. Or armors that only have over the top patterns stripes or polka dots.

Oh yeah, Vale’s armour looks amazing in campaign, but the skins, combined with the coloured undersuit completely destroy the design in multiplayer.

I wish it was like this to begin with and then you unlocked skins for the armor, instead of having to unlock a whole new armor set.

Well, there isn’t much difference I suppose. But I guess you would benefit from getting a new paint job as one item and not having to unlock the separate parts. Didn’t think about that. Definitely would be better.

I agree with OP. Armors be over-designed. 343i has torn out a lot of the pages from Bungie’s art bible for Halo.

I feel the same too

Your edits feel much nicer and less cluttered than a lot of the armor’s we have in game, but at this point, I’ve given up on Halo 5 and shooters in general. I don’t expect 343 to add these, but we might get a pizza Mark VI!

That’s basically the same as what we have now, just by a different name. I think the UI confuses the issue as well.

Maybe it could work like how Team Fortress 2 does some of their cosmetics. You can get the basic one and there’s seperate “styles” to them (for example there’s a hat that has goggles and a pom pom, but has styles that take off the goggles, take off the pom pom, or take off both).
Perhaps you could do that.
