So, I was scanning through the list of achievements, and one of them was called “Civil War”.
This immediately got me thinking: is this to do with the Covenant’s Civil War which is probably winding down and coming to an end in H5, or is it about the resurgent Human Insurrection?
I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always wanted the Insurrection to be included in the games, simply to show the dire straits that Humanity is in: not only are technologically advanced alien fanatics are trying to wipe out Humanity, not only are their powerful, ancient alien devices scattered all across the galaxy, just waiting for the wrong someone to get their hands on them, not only is there an all-consuming parasitic organism bent on assimilating all life in the galaxy, the Humans are divided by Civil War, which weakens their already tenuous position in the Galaxy.
In Halo 2, when you play as the Arbiter, you only ever fight Heretics and Loyalists, because they wanted to show that Humanity was united against the alien onslaught, while the Covenant was divided. Well, that, and because they thought that if the Arbiter were to kill Humans during gameplay, it would make him a less sympathetic character.
But still, my point is that after 14 years of Halo gamed being exclusively about killing aliens, to suddenly put us in a position where we have to kill other Humans will certainly change not just the gameplay dynamic, fundamentally change the narrative and make Halo an ever more darker story. Ever since I’ve read Eric Nylund’s books, I’ve been a huge fan of the Insurrectionists, because it show that the UNSC isn’t a perfect little society without flaws, and that even when we’ve got alien forces trying to destroy us all, we’ve still got Humans doing the selfish thing and looking out for themselves first, rather than working together for the common good.
And after reading Haruspis’ article about the Three Vectors of Chaos, a Human Civil War could have severe ramifications for future Halo games.
I wish it was innies, but I’m fairly sure it’s just the climax of the covenant civil war
Considering that the 12th level (The one that unlocks Civil War) is called “Battle of Sunaion”, I’d say it’s Elites.
What’s interesting is level 13, which remains un-named, unlocks “Reclaimation”
Well, it most definitely is the achievement for completing “Battle of Sunaion”.
While this is most definitely my favorite level in Halo 5, I still can’t help but be disappointing that the Innies aren’t in the game. But , they can still make an appearance later on. After all, Cortana’s rebellion against the UNSC could result in the destruction of all Human governance, and when she is “inevitably” defeated by the resistance, this could leave Earth and the Colonies without any kind of central authority, resulting in a breakdown of law and order. The 3rd act of the Reclaimer Saga could be about the many different factions of Humans, UNSC remnants, ONI, and Insurrectionists battling for control of the Human Space, the Mantle and the technology of the Forerunner Ecumene.
The Sangheli civil we was instigated by ONI, so seeing it end was pretty cool.
This would make a nice spin off.

The war between the Swords of Sangheilios and the Servants of the Abiding Truth was instigated by ONI, and I was somewhat disappointing that they weren’t seen in Halo 5. I would have loved to have seen Arbiter and Avu Med Telcam go head to head in a fight to the death. From what I understand, the Covenant has splintered into hundreds of different factions, from Sangheili warlords, to Covenant loyalists, and Kig-Yar pirates, all with some control over colonies and warships, so it doesn’t make sense that Jul M’dama’s faction would be referred to as the Covenant, instead of one Covenant Remnant among hundreds.
