Cinematography in Infinite

At E3 we got to see the opening cutscene of Infinite, which looks great. Something interesting that 343 did with the intro was basically have it all be in a single shot. The other Halo games have the more traditional form of cinematography with cut-aways. Was cool the way 343 did it without it looking like some weird found-footage thing. Of course this is just the intro of the game, and we know next to absolutely nothing about the game, including the Campaign. With that said, do you think they’ll stick with this style of cinematography for the cutscenes or have a mixture of this and the more traditional style, and which would you prefer?

A mix is what I prefer. I just like a variety.

It is going to be a mix, though I do not think this was all one shot. Most of it was cutaways outside of the first half

I’m pretty confident they won’t be using long cuts for most of the campaign, and there will almost certainly be plenty of traditional cuts. Because the truth is that the quick cuts just work for some shots, like dialogue, where you want to show the faces of every character involved. Which is not to say that you can’t do dialogue in long cuts, but it’s going to look different, and it’s going to be more challenging to choreograph, and you might not be able to sell everybody on it.

However, I have to say that there is a part of me that would like to see 343i make a game with completely nontraditional cinematography where cuts are minimized. I’m not sure it would be good, but no matter the outcome, it would at least be interesting.

Yeah, good point, they’ll likely mainly have the more traditional style. God of War (2018) did a really good job of having the cutscenes that don’t have really any cuts. Would be cool if some sort of spin-off tried that.

I made a similar post shortly after the trailer. I’m glad to see more people noticing it. Makes me think of God of War.

I really liked the cinematography in the trailer. It was very noticeable but in a good way. It will help the game feel more real. Although this may lead to some weird shots.

Did look quite good, though we’re not sure if this technique will be used for the entire Campaign. If I had to guess, it’ll mainly be more of the traditional style.
