What are you hoping for from the MC in Infinite? I didn’t like his “No, we need to fight” one liner from the trailer – Chief has never had a problem retreating to assess intel because he knows he’s the most valuable surgical-strike weapon there is. He has no problem jumping into a fray but only when he knows his goal is on the other side, even if he doesn’t always know what he’ll do until he gets there.
He wakes up, the ship immediately comes under fire, and the only info he has is that they need to run and they CAN run. In other Halo games, when chief’s ship was under fire, he fought if they couldn’t flee. But here, chief says “No, we need to fight.” Based on what information? Fight who? For what purpose? He sounds like someone who, instead of fighting because it’s what needs to happen, fights because he literally can’t think of anything else to do, and this makes him a weaker, flatter character. Yes, I know fighty one liners are his thing, but this didn’t make me feel “damn that’s badass”, but instead I thought “that doesn’t mean anything, and you gave that other guy no instructions before you abandoned him for no discernable purpose… you’re becoming your own cliche.” And if he DID have a purpose, why not show the player? H5 didn’t explain anything to the player so we were always confused and uncommitted to the MC’s goals, and I’m hoping for different this time.
MC in 5 felt like a character I was watching instead of playing as, and I get the sense they’re returning to the original, simpler roots, which I prefer, but that doesn’t mean the chief can’t have emotions and thoughts and goals beyond “shoot that thingy”. That’s just as bad. MC fights on instinct and thrives on it, but he’s older now, he’s seen and done too much. I want to see a chief that gets the respect he deserves, and is informed of what he’s getting into. He’s no longer some capable and excited soldier, he’s a legend and the Demon and is weighted by his experiences that no one else understands. He shouldn’t be making lots of decisions, it’s a shooter, but I want a MC that kicks -Yoink- and analyzes from experience, and follows orders, and both intimidates and works with his superiors, and sometimes goes his own way, but always for good reason. How about you?
Given how Chief was floating out in space, and the fact that Chief almost certainly knows what is attacking. I think its likely Chief knows/thinks that running won’t be a viable option.
Well according to Halo Bad Blood, all of controlled space pretty much lost, all they’re doing now is fighting back. Where would he run now at this point if by the time of Infinite, they lost “everything?”
The E3 trailers are never a full representation of what we will get, they’re just a representation of what was done up till that point. Things change in the final product, so we may not be getting the full picture here. There may be missing information that we, the viewers, are not aware of.
But Ken Static and Roseradeon are correct. Chief may already be fully aware of what’s going on, we however do not know what is happening as of this moment.
Remember, the game has to tell us the story, not the trailer. Think of it like this; people usually make comments on things they know are going to happen that the character is not aware of because fictional characters are never aware of their own plots. In this case, it’s sort of the other way around. We have little idea of what’s going to happen, but Chief is fully aware of what’s going on.
Strong silent type. That’s all I need. No more constant jabbering about “Where is Cortana?”, “Your plan is we do as you say.”, “She’s on Meridian.”
I want one liners such as, “I won’t.”, and “Punch it.”
This was one reason that I was so happy when we got the Real Chief back in E3 2019 from the, “No, we need to fight.”, was such a great way to bring him back, kinda letting you know just how cool he is just by his speech.
So far they are doing great, they just need to stick with it.

Same, one-liners are the way to go. I liked the greater depth of MC’s character in H4, but I prefer the lines he was given in the original trilogy. We saw a bit of that in H4 with stuff like, “On occasion,” and, “No, sir.” MC was so poorly written in H5. Hopefully, we get to see more of H1-H4 Chief with a lean toward his H1-H3 character with the new narrative lead.
I hope for a more character-driven version of the Chief, like Halo 4. I find the one-liner Chief from the original trilogy to be boring by comparison.
I prefer the approach of halo 4 and 5’s take on chief.

I tend to agree. While I believe Bungie’s approach of making Chief a “ghost in a shell” of sorts worked well for the story they were trying to tell, I also believe 343’s approach was an appropriate change. If they had continued that in H5, we may have liked that story a lot more. But going from no character development to character development then back to no character development was a mistake.

Amen! I strongly believe that this is why Chief became so popular in the first place.
Hmmmmm… chief in the trailer was kinda perfect. What was he supposed to say? Ok? lets run? What kind of trailer do you suppose ?
I like the character development of chief in halo 4, (although some things said probably were best unsaid… like “she told that me once… about being a machine” … lasky already spelled it out for us… that was unnesseccary and cheif kinda speaking to himself… outloud … eh… that makes me feel like he is going insane.
Also… cheif in halo 5 … “like hell she is” … ooooh raah! lol.
Cheif is supposed to reperesent hope… if you werent following halo all this time, well now you know. The UNSC sees him as an asset as you described… but to humanity… hope. Hope is a theme i would certainly not describe as flat… not describe as cliche … even if it seems to be. Hope is deeper than any of us would like to believe. Id write a whole book on it… but I hope that you got it from that XD.
Synonyms for hope: faith, belief, trust…
What do you see in cheif? What makes him cheif? A battered human being with a traumatic life? what is good in that? Even if he is relatable through his suffering and loss… what pushes him forward?
And if he is a sweaty hard trying proffessional… what is there to love about that?
Even if hes badass… thats nice for a moment… but what about after its over?
There is a power soldier, and there is a human in that armor, and there is an idea that resides within that belongs really high with other great ideas… If not the 1st best, perhaps the second or third. Hope.
Cheif trusts in himself. We trust cheif.
I think there needs to be a balance struck between the more human Chief of 4/5, and the silent, 2 one-liners per-gam Chief of the original games.
Gimme back my humanized Halo 4 Chief, please. All those themes were totally abandoned in Halo 5.

Yes yes yes!

Nice to see some enthusiasm.
Like others have been saying, we don’t really understand the situation in its entirety as to why Chief responded the way he did. Given more context when playing the game it’ll be more likely that what you brought up won’t be a problem.

This is my thoughts exactly. Its established that both are parts of his character at this point and I think thats a good thing as it makes him more dynamic.
As usual, he doesn’t need to talk much, only when needed with enough words to get the point across. I really enjoyed how they developed the character in 4 and it’d be nice to see more of that alongside his catchy one-liners in Infinite.
