Ok so I was reading through the halopedia on geas and this came to me.
when the librarian altered chief she updated his geas to give him a new mission.
according to halopedia geas can give a person orders they can not refuse or even realize they are following orders.
chief may leave the unsc because he has been programmed for a more important mission.
the librarian said Cortana was part of the plan. Chief may try to revive Cortana not because he wants to but because he is ordered to by his geas programming since he needs her to push his reflexes farther than his Spartan training allows( her ability to do this was in the fall of reach novel) and lets be honest without her help the didact would have won.
Cortana may be"dead" however as long as Halsey is alive she can be re-created even if she is slightly different.
I could see Halsey getting assassinated by ONI but somehow chief must record her dying brain to fulfill the librarians plan(or Halsey could be killed with a head shot which could also be a problem) a brain could still be cloned but Halsey memory could not be transferred like the original Cortana.
anyhoo John would now be working for a higher authority than the UNSC or ONI and bureaucrats hate the idea there is something greater than them so they send Locke after him.
meanwhile chief is on his mission to stop the mystery threat in deep space.
imagine this chiefs gias tells him he needs to get to Halsey she can construct a new Cortana model as they begin Palmer or Locke interupts and blasts Halsey with a promethian weapon and she is completely disintegrated.

TBH, I’m kind of tired of the whole Cortana side of things.

than you should love this. It would be an ultimate end to Cortana.
the real idea here if you read through is that chief is being guided against his will by librarian whom I think is not as sweet as she seems.
read the halopedia entry on gias to get this.
the Cortana hunt is because the first trailer implied it pretty heavily.
He might be set on the path of reclamation, while the rest of humanity is messing around Chief might actually make progress towards humanity inheriting the mantle. Atleast that’s what I think this saga will consist of, just humanity taking the spot of top dog in the galaxy.
Another thing I thought of that makes me think I may be onto something here is from halo 4.
when chief refuses the order from del Rio it seems like he is doing it to save Cortana, but a Spartan should not be able to refuse an order. That normally would be next to impossible for him, however if the librarian changed his geas she may have overwritten his unsc conditioning.
as a viewer del Rio seemed like a jerk so we couldn’t fault chief for his actions but he should not have even had the ability to say no to a superior officer.
