At the end of Halo4 Chief experiences what for all intents and purposes was a religious experience. He survived an atomic blast at ground zero. He met Cortana in the “flesh” in some kind of digital afterlife. He knows she exists somewhere outside our normal world.
I think he looked somewhat monk like in the original trailer.
so what I think is this, chief is looking for Halsey so he can get answers. Halsey is now an enemy of the state because of the events in Spartan ops. To the original Spartans halsey is sort of a surrogate mother. Remember Jorge referred to her as mom. I think chief needs to:
- find out what the deal is with helping the neo covies.
2 ) if she can help restore cortana and if not
- can the janus key lead him to forerunner tech that can restore Cortana.
he is undoubtedly questioning everything he knows.
If it takes the “We must revive Cortana route.”, I’d find it disappointing.
“don’t make a girl a promise, if you don’t intend to keep it”
think of it like this, we already know how far Chief will go to save Cortana. At the end of Halo4 he knows for a fact her consciousness still exists somewhere and I do not think knowing that he will just call it quits.
if he did that would be disappointing.
Jorge said “ma’am” not “mom” to Halsey. His accent made it appear to sound like mom but the subtitles state otherwise.

Same. #StayDeadCortana
Oh. I thought he called her “mum”.
that’s too bad now Jorge seems less interesting.
I thought calling her mom gave him personality.
either way since she raised them since they were six she still is kinda their stepmother albeit a wicked one.

well this thread was about Chiefs mental state not whether or not Cortana should or should not return.
I do think that is what he will try to do though while awol
I guess this is what I was trying to say with this thread.
- in reach chief lost his friends on noble team and the planet he was trained on.
- in halo CE chief lost captain Keyes whhom he had known his entire life as a sparten.
- in halo 3 chief lost his longtime friend avory Johnson.
- in halo 4 he lost Cortana (again)
- in Spartan ops his surrogate mother is on the run from the unsc.
what does he have left to make him stay with the unsc?
all his personal motivations are gone.
I do think Halo 5 will feature a clash of sorts between:
- the old UNSC - Chief, his Spartan-II friends with whom he was last seen (Blue Team - Kelly, Linda, and Fred), Lord Hood maybe, and Halsey- ONI and the new Spartan branch - Locke, Palmer, Osman, Fireteam Majestic, etc.Obviously ONI and the Spartan branch want Halsey dead. Chief and Blue Team probably want to get to her first to hear her side of the story, and Chief may be hoping she can do something to revive Cortana. Locke and the gang from ODST aka fresh Spartan-IVs are looking to find rogue Chief and Blue Team… maybe just because ONI wants to bring them back into the fold, although it’s probably more than that.
Some sort of climatic showdown between these two sides would be pretty badass IMO.
Then you’ve got Jul and the rogue Covenant, the Janus Key, the Prometheans and Forerunners, the Arbiter is back, the Elites and Brutes are still kind of at war, the Human Insurrection is stirring up again, the Prophets are missing but presumably sitll out there, and we all know the Flood are coming back. There’s a ton going on in the universe right now, it’s just a matter of how much Halo 5 is going to cover.

Osman is not from the “new spartan branch” is just a SII who hates halsey.
