Chief's Mannerisms in CEA

I knw im late, but CEA was amazing! The new sounds were sick, (especially the sniper rifle). I found the graphics to be a bit cartoonish, but in all honesty, thats probably exactly how CE would look today if they planned on staying true to the original concepts. It definitely did the game justice!

But to be honest, (and i hope im not the only one that noticed), but the Chief’s movements in CEA were just too exaggerated for me. It was like he was out of character sometimes by the way he would move in cutscenes. It ended up being really corny and annoying whenever he would do it. (Especially that little head nod that machinimas use when characters talk, or when George Bush talks). It just irritated me to think that he might do that kind of thing in Halo 4.

Did anyone else catch this? Or is it just something thats annoying me and really no big deal to the rest of you?

That bothered me as well. I really can’t picture him bobbing his head and making all of those unnecessary movements as the elite, well trained perfect soldier that he is. All of his movements are supposed to be careful and measured and it was really weird to see him moving like that.

To be fair though, some of it did look really good, but a good amount of his movements just didn’t look right and really didn’t match up with the dialogue too well.

Couldn’t agree more. The less he moves, the more important and powerful each move comes across. If he’s shrugging and bobbing his head around, he seems more of an animated easygoing guy and less of the hardened tool of war that he is.

I WAS SO THINKING THIS.

While seeing Chief in such epic graphics and amazingly fluid and realistic animations, it just didn’t seem… right. I would say either I’m used to his more robotic feel, or overall it portrays his figure better.

One good example is (not sure what level, Two Betrayals beginning I think?) in the cutscene, where Chief says 'If we can activate Halo, we can wipe them out.", and then makes this smooth sweeping motion with his hand. While it’s perfectly normal, I always found that animation sort of… buggering. Too human maybe?

When he put that AR on his shoulder… I said “This is not the Chief I know”.

Egh, tell me about it.

I really hate to say it, but I do agree. It wasn’t just the Chief either, Cortana and Keyes had their moments too. I think they did the old “we can do this so lets do it as much as possible”. It’s still my favorite game in the series but this was a bit annoying. I don’t think future games will have this problem though.

Guess these kids never played Combat Evolved when it came out.

What makes you say that?

I get fed up of reading this sort of thing about graphics. So you’d prefer it if Halo’s visuals were like Gears of War’s where the only mix of colour is brown and grey? Reach went this way and it looked awful. Halo’s visuals are unique, they stand out because it’s supposed to show a more lively and ambient atmosphere.

It’s not a big deal at all, really. His stoicism and lack of movement only added to the blandness of his character in the original, some of his gestures are a tad exaggerated but otherwise they’re a good way of portraying how he’d realistically act.

Wait, reach only had shades of grey and brown? That’s news to me.

My problem I’ve seen watching cutscenes is how they have some parts that is very obviously redone/made better, then beside them is parts that are very clearly untouched and crappy.

Most of the Cortana moments, the plasma torpedos in the one cutscene…

Is the walk Keyes has at the beginning the space walk?

I noticed the animations too, it worked for the most part but then there were moments I though John was doing… too much.

The graphics were also good for the most part, the only thing that really bugged me was that the flood looked cel-shaded (Borderlands style) in my opinion. Everything else look normal except for the flood.

I lol’d. Your funny, any more jokes? lol jk, but I loved the way the flood looked honestly, and I dont see what you mean by celshaded, it looks nothing like it.

Do you mean this part?

He does that in the original Halo CE too…

Yah it really bother me as well… I really hope this isnt the direction they are taking in the reclaimer trilogy, i like the stoic focused (somtimes sarcastic) chief. He seemed a bit… cocky in the ANV

He does all of these things you guys are talking about in the original too

Yeah, I am pretty sure all the animations were the same as they were in the original…

Not entirely true. Some in the cutscenes are changed.
