I don’t think our John 117 should die by Halo 6 at all, it would just be pointless.
I think he should pass on the mantle of Master Chief to a younger Spartan and seek a quiet life in some vacant part of the universe. Similar to the Dark Knight Rises Ending. It wouldn’t be some random recruit, it’d be a Spartan we’d spent the whole game with in which Chief realized how similar they were in nature and how he’d be the right successor. He’d realize how much he sees himself in him.
What do you think?
It would not be passing on the rank per say.
But it more like passing on the Mantle of being a Hero.
Come Halo 6, I don’t want the Chief to die but I’d like to see the Mantle of “Hero Spartan” be passed to someone which we may even get to see/play in the final game at some point.
Why would it be pointless for him to die? If his sacrifice manages to save the entire universe, that’s far form pointless. Hell, even Steve Downes, Chief’s voice actor, thinks he should die by the end. And I hate to break it to you, but Master Chief is a rank, ie Master Chief Petty Officer.

Why should he die? Does he deserve that? I want a satisfying conclusion to my character, not a sob story.
As for other reasons, it would be cliche, generic and not a complex one as say Bruce Wayne’s fate.
You realize that ‘Master Chief Petty Officer’ is a rank in the UNSC right? It’s not just a random title or nickname, and you don’t just pass on ranks to whoever you wish. That being said, there were undoubtedly hundreds, if not thousands of “Master Chiefs” throught the Halo Universe during all of the games.
EDIT: Looks like someone already beat me to it. . . also, personally, I don’t want the MC to die because I prefer a more happier ending, but it’s not that big of a deal to me in an FPS like Halo compared to an RPG like Mass Effect where you basically become the character.

I don’t just mean the title, I mean the role, the duty and the symbol.
While Master Chief is a rank and can’t be passed down, I get where you’re coming from. Seems the only way any story can end these days is with the hero dying in some heroic fashion, and I loved how DKR broke away from that. As for Halo though, I really have no idea how they’d end it otherwise. What happy ending is there for Spartans?
I know it sounds cheesy, but I think it’d be kind of interesting if one or both of his parents possible survived and they could meet… I know the implications of that are awkward, but it’d be a really unique scenario in the Halo universe.

John does not have a life to go back to. His homeworld was destroyed, his family is more than likely dead and with the Spartan-IIs origins classified to the public, it’s not like he could go find his folks and say “Hey guys I;m still alive.”
To have John wander the galaxy alone with no purpose is dumber than having him die fulfilling his purpose of defending humanity, if not the whole galaxy. In death, Chief could serve as the inspiration for galactic unity.
I find the whole idea of “passing down the mantle” very corny. Keeping him alive is much more pointless, because it will leave absolutely no impact, no legacy at all, given the fact that he will have fought through two trilogies.

I’m not positive, but didn’t they de-classify all the origin information on the Spartan IIs in Glasslands?

He should die because it would ensure the character could not be used again. Besides, could you really see the Chief retiring?

I’d say Chief faces a near-death situation but pulls through and ends this threat. He may just fake his death and tell said Spartan to say to everyone that he died(TDK-type ending), or he may just resign and settle down somewhere.

Thus far, only the Spartans themselves have been given an option to look at their files. None have taken up the offer yet, but one named Naomi let an ODST friend, I dare say developing lover, look at hers.
Needless to say he was pissed. Imagine the rebels getting those files, BOOM, another civil war with the rebels clearly having a credible beef. No doubt ONI’s head Margaret Parangosky will blab to some tribunal, but I can’t see the public getting that info.

Parangosky allowed surviving Spartans to view their own files. However, the files were still classified to the public.

That does not sound like anything John would do. He would be going AWOL and that is not something a Spartan would do.

I would see him settling down and starting a family or fake his death and go on epic adventures with the Arbiter in unexplored parts of the universe. And that’s the whole point of passing down the mantle, so he is not used again.
