Chief V Locke Marketing Exaggerated and Misleading

Based on the actual footage we’ve seen from the game, it appears that the “Chief Vs Locke” and “All hail the conquering hero” and “Locke, friend or foe?” marketing seems to be greatly exaggerating what is going to actually occur in the game.

Here’s what we know:
Chief sees a vision of “Cortana’s Ghost” and based on what she tells him, he takes blue team on an unsanctioned mission to follow up on what she says (probably about going to Meridian). Obviously UNSC won’t support this mission, and thus Chief and Blue team are branded as AWOL. THERE IS NOTHING MYSTERIOUS ABOUT CHIEF’S MOTIVES, SO ENOUGH WITH THE “TRAITOR?” BUZZWORD ALREADY.

Locke’s team is tasked with finding Chief. Based on E3 campaign footage**, Buck and Locke don’t seem to want to do what they are being asked, and are conflicted with their mission. Thus ending the “FRIEND OR FOE?” QUESTION UP FRONT BEFORE THE GAME EVEN LAUNCHES.**

In the anniversary cut scenes, Arbiter tells Locke “if he has left the fold, he has his reasons.” Locke responds: “I’m sure he does Arbiter, and I intent to find out what those are.”

Conclusion:
Nothing about any of the material from the game suggests that Locke wants to kill Chief, or that Locke will even be antagonistic towards Chief for any reason. In fact, it appears that he is looking for reasons to understand Chief’s motives and align himself with him. This is a little disappointing to me, as I was hoping to see a really nice character arc with a hardcore ONI-operative (perhaps even borderline brainwashed) realizing the error of his ways and the false information he has been given and going AWOL himself to aid the Chief. I don’t know, I feel like the marketing thus far has been a little misleading. It’s clear that Locke is not a foe, but that he and his entire squad are friendly.

I was thinking about this before E3 and by that time I would have totally agreed with you but after seeing the campaign demo, with buck saying:
“Every other Spartan, every soldier, they gonna hate us when they hear about this. You know that right?”

I have a feeling ONI wants to get rid of everything related to the Spartan II program, so they kill of Halsey, hunt/kill the surviving Spartans and silence everyone who knows about it… Before HTT I thought they were not capable of so much madness, but now? ONI is the evil itself…

Note: Don’t rely on what Locke says to the Arbiter, humanity aka. ONI betrayed him and his race multiple times, supporting the civil war etc. (Kilo-Five).
So Locke/Oni using Arby to find chief seems not that unrealistic

Possibly, but you can say the same about most early promotional bits for game’s pre-launch.

There’s also the possibility that the relationship becomes contentious over the course of the campaign.

I grew very tired of listening to people entertain that Chief and Locke would physically fight each other.

ONI hates Halsey. And will probably do anything to kill her. The surviving Spartan IIs are pretty much her children. ONI has tried to kill her a few times now. And judging from the way Palmer acts towards Halsey…We can assume the most Spartan IIIs don’t like her too much. Ergo Spartan IIs want Halsey alive. Spartan IIIs don’t.
Conflict!

Also remember. By 2589 she returns to Humanity. And gives the…Eulogy for the Spartan from Reach.

Exactly, it’s possible that Locke starts off as friendly towards the Chief but as the campaign goes on and events unfold, that changes; but ultimately Locke has been ordered to hunt down the Chief

Yeah aimbot Linda would end this fight before they could even get their weapons ready.

No okay just kidding here I don’t see a physical fight happening too, seems like it was just a PR thing

I don’t think Locke is that dumb, at least that’s what I get from what we’ve seen of him so far. While cocky at times (the “I’m a Spartan now, sir” line felt so awkward…) he generally seems inquisitive about what motivates events/etc and so far it seems like the rest of his team has their heads about them as well.

Usually I take any game marketing as ONI propaganda until we see more since they’re heavily pushing that aspect in Hunt For Truth and elsewhere. We know Chief isn’t a traitor and that he’d go AWOL only for the right reasons.

Locke isn’t a bad guy, that much was clear in Nightfall, and he definitely wants to know Chief’s side of the story. But that doesn’t mean he won’t try to take Chief down if he has too especially if he is activating Guardians for some purpose he seems not inclined to share. Yet before judging something as misleading, can we at least wait until we play the story and see what happens?

finally someone posts actually truth instead of bullcrap ive seen all over the forums

I think anyone that watched nightfall knew it wasn’t going to be John vs locke. Lockes a good guy as is John. Locke will no doubt “HUNT” John but once John explains what he’s doing and why we all know they’ll team up.

To be quite honest, I believe they will team up in the game at some point.

Just going to add that…The live action trailers are just there for hype. Doesn’t mean that we are going to experience that scenaro in the game.

Agreed. I laugh when people say MC will be killed off in Halo 5. I’m sorry but you literally can’t kill off a character who is THE face of xbox.

This. All this speculations and theories of what happens were fun for some time, but by now they’re just making me sick

Come on guys, we all knew from the start that Chief and Locke aren’t actually enemies. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re fighting together by the end of the game or in Halo 6.

You have to give 343i credit. They know how to set us up for an unexpected twist, like that last hunt the truth episode for example.

Yeah, that would probably be the stupidest thing ever in a Halo game. It would be a lot cooler to see a brief cutscene of them in a verbal argument with a few punches thrown, but to actually fight against one another in-game? That would be comically bad.

Yeah, I think we all knew that. For some reason though, I was hoping we might see some kind of evolution of the Locke character after he had been trained by ONI to be a spartan that would make him more cynical and possibly even misguided and overzealous. That’s doesn’t really appear to be the case, as he appears to have not changed at all as a character since the events of Nightfall.

I think this will be much sooner in the game than anyone is anticipating. I’m guessing like 2 or 3 missions into the game one his team catches up to Blue team.
