Has anyone else noticed how in nearly every first person shooter the character you’re playing as never talks during gameplay? I recently remebered this after playing the Battlefield 3 Campaign, where you character hardly talks unless it’s a cut-scene.
This has also happened in Halo. In Halo CE, 2 and 3 the Chief doesn’t talk during gameplay (but to be fair, he hardly talks anyway). ODST changed this by having the characters talk during gameplay. For example. I thought it was really cool when Buck interacted with the Marines. You see other characters talk to them all the time but you never talk to them. It also gave Buck (and all of the other ODSTs) a bit more character.
But then Reach came out, and we had to play as a boring old silent character again. At least the Chief had some awesome lines during cutscenes, Noble 6 didn’t say anything cool)
I find it really annoying in games where a characte is talking to you during gameplay, and you don’t say anything back.
So, does anyone else think it’d be a good idea to have the Chief talk during gameplay? He doesn’t have to talk all the time, just talk to the other characters when they talk to him. It’d help a lot of people understand the story a bit more too.
Yeah to be honest Chief can be a bit rude when he swaps weapons with the marines without asking lol nah Chiefs da boss. But yes I agree Chief could talk a little, and I think he may do what you’ve spotted he does not. 343 Industries did state that they would dwell more on Chiefs personality and such so it could become a feature I guess.
No thank you. I honestly can’t stand it when a player character talks during gameplay. Let them run their mouths as much as they want during cutscenes but please keep it out of gameplay. It breaks the experience for me.

I’m the opposite. I think it makes it feel like you’re just playing a game rather than experiencing a story. In the book “The Flood” the Chief responds to Cortana all the time, but in the game he never talks. It’s a bit unrealistic (I use that term loosley) and it seems a bit rude too, especially when Captain or Miranda Keyes is giving Chief an order.

I get your thinking but for me, well I like to fill in those gaps myself. If it’s gameplay, I like to feel in control, every game I’ve played where there in dialogue in gameplay, I’ve just found it really annoying. I think this is really one of those ones where it would be good to have an option for it.
When playing Half-Life 2 all I kept thinking was that it was weird that Gordon doesn’t respond to what characters say, and that they don’t really acknowledge his silence. It broke the immersion a bit, for me. Basic responses would be fine. Not too much rambling (and not too frequently), but not dead silent, either. I know it’s supposed to be about the player being the character, but then I feel as if the game’s giving me this role but I have no voice. I wouldn’t sit their and say absolutely nothing. It’s just strange, and a tad bothersome.
> Yes, he should talk in gameplay, but it shouldn’t be lame comments. I also don’t always feel like I’m in the mood for constant…chattering. If they can find away to appeal to two crowds (or personalities), it’ll be great.
Yeah I agree. It’d just be nice if he responed to someone giving him an order, or when Cortana is talking to him seeing as they talk to each other in the cutscenes all the time.

It does the opposite for me, I love playing with Master Chief’s voice in Reach firefight. As long as he doesn’t say something every other second, this would be a great little addition.
I’d like to see something similar to ODST. Maybe have Chief have a standing conversation with an ally at certain sections of a level. None of this firefight one-liner every time I throw a grenade crap.

I agree there with ya, but it wouldn’t bother me either way if the chief spoke more often or not. I don’t know, I guess Kinda gotten use to the whole dead silence thing since earlier game experiences from classics like Golden Eye or Eternal Ring [very old games lol]
