Halsey is alive in 2589.
She isn’t dead and out of all the people in humanity, she would be the one who could fix Cortana up.

Well considering all we have is that one line, I wouldn’t call him an idiot. We don’t know the context or the situation that they are in.

especially since cortana is based on halseys brain tissue, thus halsey has a better understanding of how cortanas inner processor works… besides, maybe halsey was aboard the infinity by this point, 5 years HAVE passed since we left the chief, who the hell knows what happened.

Probably because Halsey is a foremost expert in artificial intelligence and Cortana was created literally from a clone of her brain. If anybody know how to fix Cortana, it’s her.

you mean the only person who has enough knowledge to help her achieve metastability?

That is really the only ‘known’ solution to help Cortana, and at this point, the Storm Covenant had been chasing the Chief into Requiem, so THERE WERE means of getting back to Earth (that is, if they could even get out of Requiem).
So there were means to escape.
Plus, imagine if one of your close friends were dying, or something in that regard, close friend, brother, mother, father, etc, etc. Wouldn’t you be kind of delusional? Wouldn’t you think, “We’ll just get you to the hospital and it’ll all be ok.” even though the nearest hospital is three miles away and the car you crashed is totaled now?
Think about the Chief, him and Cortana have been through thick and thin, he doesn’t want to lose her, it’s possible that his mind and thought process is clouded because of that.
Doesn’t mean he’s an idiot . . .

There may not even be scientists on the Infinity, so that;s out. Even if there is, scientists or not, they still wouldn’t find a solution for Cortana. AIs always die, and since Halsey personally created Cortana with some secret Forerunner tech, she would be the best bet. Not to mention we have light speed and slipspace drives in that age so it’s not that bad.
