Chief finally has his sense of humor back!!!

Thank you 343!!! Thank you!! Chef finally feels like his old self again with his dry witty sense of humor and tone change as he cracks a joke or a one liner. And the call back to Johnson with the Tank. Chef’s Kiss perfection. The dialogue shown so far feels amazing. Feels… like an 80/90s action flick! Which is what Halo is hahah. Thank you!

Huh, I never thought of that callback. I am all for more humor tho halo 5 only had buck and they massacred my boi. RIP Sgt Johnson

Agreed, felt like they didn’t let Nathan do his thing

Right there with you. This was one of my biggest gripes with the last couple games. For 4 and Guardians, Chief has just come of as so merose all of the time. As cheesy as they can be, I missed the dumb one liners he and other characters would drop. I really think 343 realized that aspect of Halo’s storytelling had been lacking and they threw it on full display in the campaign overview. Happy to see it dialed back up a bit.

One thing to remember is that in 4 and Guardians, Chief was experiencing a great personal loss. There was something missing. In 4 he still had Cortana, but she was clearly changing and becoming something different. He had hope that he could “fix” her if he could get her to Halsey, but the tone was still pretty dark. In Guardians, he had just watched Cortana die. He no longer has an AI. Then he finds Cortana, and she has turned. She is no longer the Cortana he knew and loved. He wasn’t himself mostly because he was going through all of these personal things. Most people wouldn’t be able to “be themselves” and keep their same sense of humor as before.

Now that he has a new AI to interact with, even if it’s not Cortana, it’s a start to him feeling some normalcy once again. I feel this is why we see that sense of humor starting to come through again. I could be wrong, and 343i could have just completely whiffed on John’s personality, but in my mind it helps to remember all of the things he’s been through. The war has taken its toll on him. They wanted to remind us that underneath that armor, he is still a human after all.

Honestly I wasn’t as excited to see this. The cheesy one-liners were a bit too much for me all around. The narration was the worst though…

Comparing the sort of precise, cinematic, immersive experience experience we had in Reach to the goofy voice over in this trailer is just sad…

I like what they’ve done so far, and I can’t wait to see it for myself in a couple of weeks.

Felt like Chief and Cortana back in halo 1-3 I definitely missed that!!!
