Change the "Assist System." Nobody likes it!

Now, I can’t fully stand behind “nobody,” as that’s a huge generalization.
I can, however, stand behind the fact that I have yet to meet a single person who has disagreed with my theory. Although, I won’t deny the chances for you guys to disagree.

My theory: (all examples are assumed to have a DMR)
-If an enemy and myself start shooting each other at the same time and we both have two shots on each other, then one of my teammates shoots him and that is the only thing that saves my life, that person deserves an assist medal.

-Another example would be if one of my teammates had been shot once in the head and I shoot an enemy twice in the body. This enemy then runs around the corner and starts battling my teammate. With the current system, assuming my teammate gets the kill, I would not receive an assist medal. With my system, I would.

Basically, with my system, a single shot to someone would reward said person with this an assist.

How this would affect us: Those games where one has less kills than deaths, but said person has aided in so many kills for said person’s teammates but not received assist medals. Said person seems as if he/she didn’t help – though he/she DID. This system would allow a person’s entire aid to the team to show.

A couple things that have been brought to my attention:

Q.) What if all 4 members from a team shoot a person and one person gets a kill?
A.) Assuming it takes 5 headshots to kill someone, all 4 people will receive an assist… all 4 people assisted with the kill. Yes.

Q.) Won’t this void the “Assistant” commendation?
A.) No! One still must earn THOUSANDS of assists for this commendation to reach Onyx and to become maxed out… THOUSANDS! Of course this system would make it a little easier… but so what? It’s ONE (1) commendation!

I fully believe this system would only be beneficial.
I always hear people saying, “I KNOW(!) I assisted in more kills than this! That’s -Yoink-!”
I also hear, “WHAT?! I didn’t get an assist on that? Bull -Yoink-!”

Thoughts/Ideas/Comments/Concerns/Questions?

Sometimes I feel like I earn assists for simply looking at an enemy, but maybe that’s just me!

I feel like the commendations for Assistant would require changing if this were implemented, even though they are already fairly high.

But I share the anger that some people feel for not receiving assist medals at times!

I wonder if the system could measure your assistance based on how much damage you have inflicted upon enemies that others killed… For example, inflicting 10% damage on ten people – that would be enough damage to kill one person, translating into one assist for that match. Of course, that causes problems with fractional assists…

All that said, I actually haven’t seen or heard anyone raise issues with assists until this thread. :\

When Arena functioned based on Ratings, the poorly designed assist system was a huge issue since assists factored into Ratings (in fact, I’m of the opinion that the Rating system would be just as good as win/loss with fixed assists). Now, however, it doesn’t really matter much.

Right now assists are 60% damage, and the kill has to be finished in 5 seconds from when you damaged the player last. This functions poorly, since in a 2v1 situation if you get 2 DMR shots on the 1 player and your teammate finishes him off, you would not get an assist, even though the kill would not have been assured without your presence. It also takes more like 7 seconds for a player’s shields to return, so your teammates have a 2 second window to finish a kill without you getting an assist. I’d say ideally the assist system would be changed to 40% damage, and the full amount of time it takes for a enemy’s shields to return. That would eliminate most of the problems.

Assists >3

So basically, you’re basing your theory off of the assumption that everyone cares if they LOOK like they helped or not in the post game lobby. I think the way assists are given right now are perfectly fine. You do some damage, and another team mate finishes them off within a certain time constraint, and you are awarded with an assist. If somebody helped me kill 5 enemies in a single game, I’m going to probably know who it was and not jump to conclusions at the end if they’re negative.

Besides, the majority of the time, if an enemy is running around heavily damaged, someone is going to get the assist for that.

Agreed. Assists shouldn’t be a runner up prize for having your kill epicly stolen. They should be a reward for teamwork. The current system doesn’t reward teamwork for the most part as one player has to do the majority of the damage and the other must get the kill.

However 1 hit rewarding an assist is excessive. Maybe just lower it to 40-50% of enemy damage = assist?

Please 343! Replace the old system with this new and improved one! I beg of you! :’(

I really like this system, and it would make so much more sense than what they have now. At the moment, an assist basically means : “The amount of times somebody stole a kill from me”, which is ridiculous.

This. I played a couple games of objective in Halo 3 yesterday and got 15+ assists every game.

I didn’t even read the post, I’m just agreeing because the assist system does need fixing.

it should be ONE utility weapon bullet for an assist. not 3 or whatever ridiculousness it is right now.

The assists system is broke. I would know, I love team fire, and I am the Pharmassists.

Also, I miss the hit % from Halo 2 <3.

People have been complaining about Reach’s blatantly broken assist system since the beta. Bungie nor 343 have listened.

I often get assists at random times, there have even been times where I knocked of someones sheild and a teammate got a headshot and I never got an assist. It should also be like in the beta were it lasts even after you died(at least untill they regain full health).

Two people shooting at one person with DMRs results in one person getting a kill and the other gets nothing (assuming hit after shields down is HS ofc).

There’s something wrong with this…

You get someone to no shields and he ducks behind a corner. Teammate pops him a headshot to get the kill… but oops, he waited too long and you get no assist even though the opponent was still with no shields.

Something wrong with this…

the whole assist system is broken in this game IMO.

First thing is, the damage you have to inflict, for actually getting an assist, is way too high. Especially with vehicles it becomes ridiculous sometimes.
I had situations where two of my rockets hit the Wraith (the cockpit area) and I got NOTHING for it. Of course, it was a teamgame, yes, and without my rockets the Wraith would had killed countless other guys on my team. But c’mon, I expected more. At least 1 credit, lol
The second thing is, that the actual “assist timer” (I believe 4 or 5 seconds) is a bit too short as well. Gears 3 has a much better assist system. You dont have to fire en entire clip on your enemy and the assist has no really time limit.

Halos assist system needs an upgrade.

I guess my point has been proved.
Now we just have to see if 343 will listen.

EDIT: Maybe if everyone hits “Tag as Favorite” beside the “Post Reply” button, then 343 will see how popular this thread and issue are. Thanks.

Assists are way to hard to get in this game. You have to ALMOST kill the person to get an assist when it should be rewarding somewhere as low as 20% of the damage done.

> Basically, with my system, a single shot to someone would reward said person with this an assist.

This seems like it would cause people to spam automatic weapons. In an extreme case, a single shield ping would give them an assist once that person died (within 4 seconds).

> Q.) Won’t this void the “Assistant” commendation?

You’re forgetting about “Any Spree.” If assists were too much easier, you could use Assist Sprees/Sidekicks/Second Gunmans to boost.
