Sorry for the vague title, but there are way to little characters
So, it has recently been confirmed that progress is only done through challenges. I do not like this at all and it raises many red flags, but one factor that concerns me the most is the fact that people will be more enticed to progress their challenges than to win the match.
I have seen people praise Halo 4’s unlock system because everything was tied to a specific challenge, but when I think back to it, I just recall going against the game to get my personal challenges. For example, I wanted the green visor which required 165 splatter kills. So, I would jump into a game of BTB, get into a ghost, and completely ignore the objective in order to get splatter kills. I felt bad, but I just wanted the visor.
(It was the same with Halo 3, but that was at least only in FFA games. Yeah, I looked like an idiot driving a mongoose in FFA, and it was certainly frustrating getting the achievements, but it did not ruin any teammates’ experiences.)
Now, challenges would mostly be daily and weekly things, so they are likely extremely simplistic. Since this game has taken quite a few pages from Destiny’s book, I imagine they will take inspiration from the bounty systems. Challenges will likely be things such as get X wins, get Y kills, play Z games in this specific playlist, etc. However, if there are challenges that are “Get X kills with a sword”, now people will be only going for the sword, camping sword spawn, rage quitting for not getting sword kills or even betraying for sword in extreme cases.
MCC does a pretty good job at avoiding these, but then they run into another problem of those challenges being repetitive and boring. Completing MCC challenges has just became a routine chore at this point.
Challenges need to be varied and interesting, but not too specific that it entices players to peruse them instead of playing the game normally. And quite frankly, I am not sure how that can be done.
