Challenges in multiplayer games are generally a bad idea imo, but if they absolutely NEED to be in the game, then they have got to be relegated to optional side customization ONLY and NOT the main battle pass. Think CoD weapon camos or calling cards.
Primary progression should only be tied to performance, by using the score that we already rack up in game. With maybe some challenges to give some small amounts of bonus XP.
Because there is such an emphasis on completing these challenges, a player’s freedom to use the full weapon sandbox is limited. They actively discourage me from playing the objectives and even just getting kills, unless I have a specific challenge for that specific objective.
To go a step further, the RNG nature of these challenges, like playing a specific game mode, or using a specific vehicle are quite frankly insane. I waste so much more time waiting around for a vehicle or weapon, or praying that I get lucky enough to land in the lobby of the game mode I need to play.
I constantly feel like I’m deciding between having fun and not making any meaningful progress, or doing tedious chores and MAYBE making SOME progress if I’m lucky. Hell, some challenges are so ridiculous, that I’m being discouraged from playing this game all together!
Progressing the battle pass feels like tedious and meaningless labor, but when I try to just play for fun, it doesn’t feel like I’m accomplishing anything outside of the game. I either have no goal to work towards and my actions have little meaning, or, I focus on challenges and have no fun. There is no in-between.
There isn’t even bonus XP for winning a match, or getting a kill. Why should I bother playing the game if my main objective is just to earn battle pass rewards? I’m either going to focus on challenges that only make me angry, or feel like I’m accomplishing nothing. I’m wasting my time and getting next to no enjoyment, no matter which I choose.
Ultimate challenge rewards… these are also a terrible idea. I don’t want to miss out on limited time customization pieces, which then forces me to focus on completing all of the challenges. Even if the primary battle pass progression was reworked to be performance based, the existence of these limited time rewards still forces me to play by the rules of the challenges, or risk missing out.
This could be solved if the rewards were not limited time. If separate, permanent, challenge categories were created, special rewards were added for each, and they could be completed whenever, then I would feel much better and less stressed about working to obtain them. Again, like CoD. CoD has specific challenge categories that reward bonus XP for each completed challenge, and a customization reward for completing the entire category. You could even add in new categories and rewards every event or so to boost player retention.
This progression system hurts the game in so many ways, and I hate to see it because I genuinely enjoy the gameplay. This method of progression is actively rage inducing. Makes me want to rip my hair out, and it takes a LOT to make me mad.
To be honest, this challenge based system needs to be entirely scrapped and replaced with a performance based one. If not, I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to stand playing. It feels like the game is actively pushing me away and telling me to go play something else. I doubt I’m the only person that feels this way.
It just really sucks to see this game that I’ve already fallen in love with, be almost completely ruined by something as basic and as fundamental as it’s progression system.
Please, for the LOVE OF GOD, fix this ASAP!
