Celebrity appearances/influences in Halo Infinite

So it’s apparent that Halo is no stranger to celebrities making their way into the game one way or another. I was too young to realize it when I first played Halo CE, but later on I realized that SGT Johnson is highly influenced by SGT Apone from Aliens. Also, the belly aching attitude of the marines was also influenced by CPL Hicks and the scene where he begins to break down. It can also be argued that Cortana is influenced by Sigorie Weaver’s character Ripley. And are we going to deny the similarities between the flood and the aliens and the way they strap they’re prey into egg sacs on the wall (Captain Keyes)? Also, just take a look at the marine armor in Aliens and then in Halo CE, and yeah, you see what I mean.

I honestly believe there are lots of ways that Halo Infinite can incorporate similar techniques into their story and gameplay. I hate to bring up Crackdown 3 again, but unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock you’ve seen that they’re basically making Terry Crews a character in the game. Yes, the super buff, super funny black dude from the old spice commercials. And according to the comment sections of YouTube videos, thousands of people are going to want to get the game just because of him.

So what could Halo Infinite do? Possibly a Marine Captain influenced by Tom Hank’s character in Saving Private Ryan? How about an android character similar to Ryan Goslings in Blade Runner 2049?

I would argue that while Halo has drawn inspiration from other franchises, it has kind of moved past that and created it’s own identity. I think any type of reference to another character or celebrity would be distracting.

I think it’s clear from the feedback that people are unhappy with the identity Halo has created for itself, and there are many characters people dislike and would have preferred to have had more depth to. The reason the old characters of Halo had so much personality and depth is because they were influenced by characters from other franchises. Hell, even Buck is influenced from Malcom from Firefly. And I’m pretty sure if I felt like doing the research I could find out who Noble team characters weren’t influenced by.

So let’s take a look at some of the newer characters:

Spartan Palmer and Tanaka. Highly disliked by community for being unoriginal and just plain non likable. Who are they influenced by? Heck if I know, but surely people wouldn’t like those characters either.
Spartan Locke: obviously influenced by Luke Cage, but even then he’s basically a watered down version with practically no humor or wit in his writing.

Its not a bad thing to get inspiration from other franchises, in fact I believe the technique is the reason Halo got anywhere at all.

I myself would love to see the return of Aliens style of marines and have a character that resembles Sgt Vaquez. She was my favorite.

I wouldn’t call those “celebrity appearances”. A celebrity appearance to me would be like Conan O’Brien’s cameo in Halo 4. Which, for me, wasn’t that funny of a cameo. Rooster Teeth cameos in the Halo franchise have been much funnier to me, despite them not being traditional celebrities.

Well the character in your Avatar is definitely a celebrity apprerance. Buck is modeled and voiced by the same man who plays Malcom in Firefly, and clearly they are characters with the same kind of dialogue and personality.

I put "appearances/influences" in the title for that reason.

Appearance and referring to ones like Buck or Terry Crews, and influences such as bellyaching leathernecks and SGt Johnson.

I wasn’t speaking on behalf of people, I was sharing my personal thoughts on the matter. There have been so many different Halo games, tones, characters, books, stories, etc that I believe there really isn’t a way to make everyone happy at this point. We all have our own outlook and perspective on the franchise, and likes and dislikes. I don’t believe there is a unified “the people want this” opinion. In my original comment I was speaking to the fact that a direct reference to a well-known character from another franchise may be distracting and I would not welcome it. I don’t mind subtle inspirations from other franchises, but I don’t like in-your-face references that take me out of the moment.

I think it’s difficult to draw a definitive conclusion that the character’s inspiration directly correlates with their amount of depth and personality. When I think of the old characters I don’t really think of them as even having a lot of depth or personality. They feel kind of shallow and one-note to me, like caricatures.

It doesn’t help that Buck is one of my least favorite Halo characters, since he feels to me like Fillion character #37.

I’m not especially fond of Palmer and Tanaka myself. But I’m pretty sure Locke pre-dates Colter era Luke Cage. If anything I’d think Luke Cage pulled inspiration from Locke.

That’s fair, I can see the point. Halo is definitely steeped in inspiration from other franchises.

I would be fine with more Aliens style marines visually. They’re fun.

“Hudson, sir. He’s Hicks.”

good catch. I haven’t seen the movie for awhile so I got the names mixed. Great use of a movie quote with correction as well. Bravo good sir or ma’am.
