Saw this video listing upcoming cosmetics in the shop. It’s 10 days old so we already got some of these. This is what you can expect to see over the next few months. I like the neon cyber stuff and shining angel flames.

Can we not apply this to keeping the Halo games familiar? I would like to enjoy a Halo game without seeing a tonne of dumb cosmetics and player outlines for the sake of pre-defined armour coatings.
As if Infinite is in a state for 343 to make Jokes.
Neither is the year old dried out Dollar Tree candy armor coating we could unlock today. Or the bright colors we could choose to apply to our Spartans in any Halo title for that matter.
Haunted stood out like a sore thumb, even more so with a blue/orange flaming helmet.
These are stand out examples compared to two stalks on a helmet you most likely will only see in the intro/outro of a match.
I think in other games things do start subtle. I wanna point at the CoD franchise, but honestly I don’t know where to start to even address the precedence of “start subtle, now you’re a gingerbread man”. MW2019 could be a recent example, with the subtlety being directed at weapon models and ramping up from there.
But Halo has had a long storied history with subtly sneaking in the goofy, so these items don’t raise any red flags. You could be right and this is the start, but there is a precedence within this franchise that suggests otherwise.
Regardless I’m still worried that they’re going to Fortnite/Warzone the store. But attacking cat ears and pineapple grenades is not my hill to die on.
Yes we know Halo has had its share of silly, but the cat ears is overtly silly and I see it as a red harring for worse to come. Hell, we have Red vs Blue. But this, screams SCREAMS Fortnite levels of silly.
I just watched mhx’s link of what’s to come and there’s some bright crazy stuff in there.
It’ll be here sooner than later, I’m sure of it.
This is only the beginning. We aren’t on Season 2 until May. It’ll keep getting crazier.
I feel like silly cosmetics are the new adapt argument and I’m on the adapt side. Halo has been out for twenty years and I’m all for having it be less serious on the multiplayer side of things in its later years for a change. Even MCC has been doing it and it’s bringing a new life to the game imo.
The only thing I’m not on board with is the price point for a lot of stuff.
Yes we do, is there not anything at all within this franchise more “overtly” silly that cat ears? Nothing at all?
On that note, “overtly” isn’t really that overt in this case, at least no more overt than other helmet attachments. If 343 wanted overt, they’d make them fluffy or glow or move. Instead, they made them metal and fit into the design and contours of the armor which actually lends some subtlety to this design choice.
The cat ears are far more subtle than the overt katana strapped to the back of Halo 3’s Spartans. Does this make the katana terrible? Hell no, not my personal cup of tea, but it certainly wasn’t there for subtlety. It was an example of “Serious but funny”.
One more thing, a “red herring” is a misleading clue meant to throw you off the investigative trail. What you mean to say is red flag.
Which is referenced heavily in the franchise.
We also have plasma rifles that shoot scarab blasts, covenant dance club parties, flaming heads, hidden dolls and cans of soda, dialogue modifiers, ninja swords and Xbox controller shoulder pads, dev rooms, and a mongoose race in the middle of a warzone.
But art design incorporated armored cat ears and ‘pineapple’ grenades is the straw that turns Halo into Fortnite for you?
Look you wanna damage control, fine. Just realize you’re not changing my stance. I just hope Halo still has its identity by the end of this 10 year live service ordeal.
Can’t wait for the Fotus horn accessory so every helmet can be Fotus
Only damage control I was doing was helping you out with understanding the misunderstanding of “overt” and “red herring” my guy.
Not trying to change your stance, just trying to have a dialogue.
I do too. Right now it does, but that could very well change and that scares me.
If there is a point where Halo does start having an identity crisis in Infinite (as it’s had with the last two numeric titles already), it doesn’t start here with pineapple grenades and cat ears. It’s going to be overt.
Bright and crazy aren’t new to this franchise though. Halo has always been a vibrant colorful game (except for 45% of Reach).
I’ve seen the leaks too, there’s some standout stuff on the way, that’s for certain. But it doesn’t yet make me go “that might be a bit much”.
I didn’t find the right verbiage, but I meant that there is stuff in there that’s “out there.”
So farts, lightning, flaming heads, floating hearts, grunt birthday, haunted skulls, unicorns, rainbows, neons, medieval stuff, and the Halo 20th Anniversary consoles, backpacks, etc stuff were all fine, but cat ears killed Halo? It’s just crazy to me how many people are foaming at the mouth over two triangles on a helmet.
Watched it, based on the precedent set by previous games and the new stuff we got in Infinite, nothing honestly stands out save for one coating and the movement/kill effects which are designed to and have precedent anyway.
I’ve seen some other stuff that wasn’t in that video that does stand out, but no more than flaming helmets have.

Here’s one thread. I could prolly find more, but I really don’t feel like it.
Ok
(20 characters…)
Looks like almost all the comments were saying they only disabled them because the game crashes a lot on console and they get bans for crashing leaving matches. Only saw a few people that genuinely hated the new stuff.
I think I’m starting to see it. They’re three dimensional triangles right? Pyramids? It all makes sense.
They’re not cat ears, they’re symbols of the Illuminati and/or Darkness Ships from Destiny. The critics just have their third eye opened/Guardians trying to warn us.
We’re the bad guys…

Ok jokes aside, I’m not going to rag on the people I disagree with too hard over cat ears.
You list the cosmetics but don’t include the extended list of Easter Eggs both blatant and subtle that also lend to the kookiness of the franchise. There’s literally no shortage of precedent for these kinds of additions to be made.
I mean you said it yourself, even the manufacturer is an Easter Egg and implies the goofiness behind the design. A design that once again that works with and blends itself into the style of armor rather than tries to stand out as something that doesn’t belong.
I understand the criticisms, I understand subjective takes, what I don’t understand are the arguments that accept the reality of the wackiness in previous games but suggest this is somehow too far.
