In their haste to sell the map as an active urban environment (which they’ve accomplished, it looks amazing) Certain Affinity cluttered the map to no end and created many nooks and crannies or small rooms with no other purpose than to enhance the canon behind the map. I’m all for maps having strong roots in the Halo universe but currently functionality is suffering because of this. At 0:42 we see a room that leads nowhere, which is excellent for camping but serves no real purpose. At 1:25 they show off the thermal reactor, which looks cool but will cause massive screen lag, especially for split screen players. The same goes for the view of the skyline at 1:50. All of this is done to make the player believe the environment, which is fantastic, except it won’t play well.
Instead of designing maps around an environmental concept, Certain Affinity needs to design maps that play well first and foremost. Once a functional blueprint is in place, I’m fine with them going wild with the aesthetics. However, what we see too often is style over substance and that needs to change.
One last thing: these commentators are awful. They know very little about gameplay and sound incredibly dull and disengaged.
In the beginning of the video you hear them say, it was originally intended for the Anniversary map pack, but they meant the Defiant map pack. I got the Tweets to prove it This was originally supposed to be in REACH lol.
It looks beautiful and I hope it plays well. I can already tell its going to be a great Snipers map! Great job Certain Affinity!
I can believe it’s leftover from Reach, because visual design-wise it reminds me a lot of what they ended up doing with the Headlong remake Breakneck. It has that same type of look to it, which, for me, is not good. That was my least favorite map as far as aesthetics go in all of Reach. It was so full of greys and earthtones and Perdition appears to be doing that even more so. It looks very barren and stale. I’m apparently in the minority with not liking the way this one looks. I’d much prefer to see that city park version they talked about.
Obviously none of this is gameplay stuff. It could play spectacularly once I get on it, but for now all I have is the look.
Yeah a leftover from Reach… awesome. I’m sure it’ll look better than what it plays. And yes the people on commentary made me laugh too. A great vehicle map ehh? But sixteen people can have plasma pistols/grenades? No map is a great vehicle map with custom loadouts.
I wish they would go back to the concept of designing maps around gameplay first, aesthetics second. Also, this grungy industrial look is overused already.

Thank you for clearing that up. I watched that video and have spent the last 10 minutes wondering how a new map was originally supposed to be in a map pack comprised solely of remakes.

No problem. I was thinking it was possibly a Turf Remake that got scrapped but kept some elements of the layout. But turns out they just Derp’d and said the wrong thing lol. Apparently they only made the maps that shipped with Anniversary, no other maps were produced and later replaced.

That was my first thought as well. I thought they meant they started on a Terf remake but when it didn’t make the cut they expanded on it for Halo 4. That or I was hoping that it was a surprise Turf remake, which was quickly killed as I watched them walk around the map.
I LOVE the look of this map. It’s going to be great for my new web series (MAC Rounds).
Beyond that, I like realistic human settings rather than futuristic Forerunner sets.
The map hasn’t even come out yet and people are already complaining…sheesh, give them a break folks. This was only a tease. At least let it come out, play on it and see if you have any of those lag issues that are being complained about.
I give it up to Certain Affinity for make visually appealing maps. And the gameplay just from the teaser looks like it will be fun mixed in with some chaos, which is even MORE fun.
this is certain affinity we are talking about dont get me wrong there maps do look really nice however they sacrifice overall gameplay performance and map flow just to make it look pretty with nice aesthetics
A trend I noticed with the first two maps they previewed is that these maps have an absurd amount of cover with few long angles. For the BR/Carbine/LR user, this puts us on an equal plain to close the gap on the DMR abusers that camp on BTB. I like the look of both maps.
Who knows? I don’t mind the idea of having slayer be on a larger spectrum as long as I know I can handle gunfights properly with few vehicle harassment. Vehicles in Halo 4 are meant more for support and map control than anything else. A vehicle in H4 without a team to back it up is dead meat and I’m all for it.
The room at 0:42 doesn’t lead to nowhere, it has a corridor across from the weird spinning thin on the wall, which I presume leads to another room which will have a room that leads outside.
