Capture Device for Halo 4

I make a lot of video montages and promotions for my gaming community. My current capture device isn’t cutting it and I was wondering what is the most reliable HD capture device for $100 to 200?

Umm HDPVR…

Not really. They’re more expensive and the software often crashes.

I like how you disagree with him without suggesting anything better…

I use an HDPVR, and I agree. The software is unresponsive sometimes and has crashed a few times. But its never been a big problem and I still recommend the HDPVR. However, the Roxio Game Capture HD Pro or the Black Magic Intensity are both alternative high quality capture cards if that’s an issue or you’d like the options.

As far as I’m concerned the OP may spend his money how he chooses. I’m just pointing out from personal experience that while the quality is nice it can be ruined by the shoddy software. Other than that it’s still a capable piece of equipment.

But since you want me to give the OP some suggestions I will do so.

OP, here’s a list of Capture Cards I would personally recommend with prices and any feedback I can offer to help you make your decision.

Dazzle DVC:
While this capture card isn’t in HD it is certainly reliable. It’s small, comes with decent software and lasts for years. However, to use this with no issues you’ll need to buy many other cables and couplers. Male and Female.

Price: £32.99 - $34.99

HD PVR:
This capture card is fine other than a few personal gripes regarding what I’ve already mentioned above and the fact that it constantly records a black line along the top and right side of your screen, not to mention if you’re looking for a space saver you might want to give it a miss as it’s as large as two house bricks side by side.

Price: £125.98 - $140.99

Elgato Game Capture HD:
This is the capture card I am currently using and so far, I have had no issues. It comes with good software that also allows you to stream to places like Twitch and YouTube and even allows you to record your voice over the video for each clip you capture. As for size, about the size of an iPhone? Maybe? The only drawback I can see for this one is how much it costs.

Price: £135.60 - $158.77

Here’s a couple I would tell you to avoid at all costs.

HD PVR2:
You might be tempted to purchase this thing simply because it’s an upgraded version of the HD PVR but believe me, all you’re paying for is new packaging and a smaller box. The software has also managed to become even worse which sometimes causes the captured footage to decrease in quality and even drop frames.

EasyCap:
This thing is literally a USB drive that connects to a TV. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Pinnacle Studio MovieBox:
Pretty much the same as an EasyCap but with a shinier box. Software is…alright which is pretty much it’s only redeeming quality.

I like the Roxio that MH Mimic Hat had mentioned. My buddy has one, and that’s what we use to record my vids. My first vid on YT was in B&W, due to my TV being old and ghetto, but we captured on his TV, and it looks gorgeous. It has a lot of the features that the Elgato Game Capture HD that The Spearhead had mentioned. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if the software occasionally becomes unresponsive, or if it’s my buddy’s crappy computer. It’s not a huge issue, just force close the software and reopen. So easy, a grunt could do it.

It’s small, but very nice. It does cost $149.99, which is a chunk of change, but it is definitely worth it in my opinion.
