Can't Stand Halo 3 MP

There, I said it. I can’t stand Halo 3’s multiplayer. I am tempted to quit at the beginning of the game every single time I have to play it in BTB! That’s how bad it is! Now, before you Halo 3 Elitists start bashing me for being “too casual” allow me to explain myself.

I love playing Halo: CE and Halo 2. I never got to play their multiplayers because I was probably 9 years old at the time and didn’t have an Xbox to play them on. I don’t know what it is about those two, but even though they are really old, I really enjoy playing them. I also love playing Halo 4. While most people despised it, I enjoyed the fast pace of the game, the new weapons, and so many more features that would take forever to list. I also love Halo 2: Anniversary. 343 did a remarkable job remastering the maps and Halo 2 feels fresh and fun with beautiful updated graphics! I can’t say the same for Halo 3. Honestly, I really wish I could enjoy it and I really want to, but I can’t and I never will. Why? Well, maybe it’s because overall Halo 3’s multiplayer feels like a step DOWN from Halo 2 which is really pathetic. Hit detection in Halo 3’s weapons (especially the BR) is absolute trash! In all of the other Halo’s I have no problems getting kills with any weapon, but no matter what weapon I use in Halo 3, it feels like my enemies just eat the bullets like a sponge and take very little damage. Even rocket launchers don’t seem to do the same amount of damage as the other Halos! Enemy shields don’t fluctuate the same way that the other Halo’s do and it doesn’t feel like the shields are ever going to break. Plus, where are the headshot medals?! Seriously, even Halo: CE has headshot medals and that game is 6 years older than Halo 3! Also, Halo 3 feels so slow paced. Now, I am not talking about sprint, but just the combat in general, especially on big maps. To me, it never feels like there is never anything going on because most of the time everybody spawns with stupid ARs and we have to go find BRs, which of course there isn’t enough for everyone, so some people have to walk across those big maps to find anyone to kill. I know this isn’t the case all the time, but even when we spawn with BRs the stupid hit detection doesn’t help anything and the BRs range is pitiful in Halo 3. At least on the other Halo’s there is almost always something going on because you almost always have a pistol in CE, a BR in 2, and your loadouts in Halo 4! I also don’t like many of the maps in Halo 3. Valhalla, Avalanche, Last Resort, and a couple others are about all I like, whereas I pretty much like every map in the other Halo games.

I guess overall, Halo 3’s MP feels like a chore to play and I have absolutely no fun playing it even when I get perfections! I am tempted to avoid BTB altogether because surprise, surprise, everybody there picks Halo 3 and doesn’t even bother to give Halo: CE, Halo 2, and Halo 4 a chance even though all three of those games are far better than Halo 3.

Well, my rant is over. Come at me Halo 3 Elitists! I know how much you hate it when people don’t like Halo 3 and I can’t wait for you to tell me how skilless/casual I am cause that’s about the only stupid comeback you can ever come up with.

Wow I thought I was the only one, being a huge Halo 2-3 fan myself I can hardly stand Halo 3 anymore. Something about it feels off and it doesn’t have that charm it used to have anymore. Even Halo 2 and CE aren’t as fun anymore because they run on the PC engine which was worse for both of them and had really broken spawns. Seriously, any Halo 2/CE game of BTB or any mode for that matter has both teams spawning in really weird spots or right next to each other. I honestly never thought I’d have to say it, but Halo 3 is really hitting the bottom of the list for me, even Halo 4 almost looks better than it because unlike Halo 3 it actually works. Even though I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s due to 343’s meddling trying to make the older games die out and have H2A and Halo 4 be more popular because they only made them work while the classics are plagued with bugs.

I can see how this feels infuriating when playing Halo 3 but a lot of this hate you have for Halo 3 stems from a lack of understanding of how Halo 3 works versus Halo 1 and 2. For the most part Halo 1 and 2 used something called hitscan when determining if you hit a target. What this means is if in Halo 2 for example you shoot at a target with the BR is if you have your reticule on the opponent when you pulled the trigger the hit is scored instantaneously. Same with Halo 1 and the pistol. In Halo 3, the BR hit detection has been switched to a projectile mechanic where the bullets have a small amount of travel time (the longer the distance the longer the travel time). Halo 3 only registers a hit when the bullet has reached said target. This becomes an issue for people shooting at each other from any kind of distance. If I’m running across the middle of Valhalla for example and you start shooting at me from the pelican aiming at me in the side with your reticule right on me, as long as I keep moving you will miss every shot even though it shows a red reticule and appears to be on my body. As for headshot medals not existing in this version of Halo 3. Headshot medals never existed in Halo 1, 2 or even 3 unless it was with a sniper rifle and even then only in 2 and 3. The medal you see in 1 and 2 was added specifically in the MCC and due to a bug 343 still has not worked out does not appear in Halo 3 for some reason even when one achieves a headshot kill. So no, Halo CE did not actually originally have headshot medals. Hope this helps.

I love all the Halo games, but I certainly like CE, 2, & 4 more than 3. And to be completely honest, it’s most because I’m better at the other three.

^^^^ all of this. he knows what’s up.

Halo 3 is GOAT! Harder BR, plasma pistols that don’t seek around corners, bleed thru and best melee system. I like the slow pace. I think halo is supposed to be a slower game, midway between cod and gears.

I love halo 3 and play it all the time but in a sense it is true the charm isnt there as much because of the people who play it now. It still is really fun to play in my mind.

Not a Halo 3 fan either, for similar reasons. Also: 70 degree FOV. My head hurts. That is all.

I forgot to say in my earlier response though, as much as I personally enjoy Halo 3 I do agree that people need to pick Halo 1 and 2 more in BTB. They still have fantastic maps and gametypes and I think it would be cool if we are going to have a cross game btb playlist that a bit more balance with hoping from 1 to 2 to 3 and back evenly would be appreciated. My personal idea of Halo heaven is a good match of big team battle slayer on Headlong or District. In my opinion those two maps have a near perfect balance of indoor/ outdoor, vehicle/ on foot combat. Truly defines what the Halo sandbox is all about.

I enjoy 3, mainly in action sack lol

I actually can’t stand h3 in MP either. It does not feel the same, and the BR registration on MCC is not the same in my opinion.
In case you think I’m a bad player and know nothing: https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/games/halo-3/xbox-360/service-records/players/lasade

I just stick to H2A and H2C because it feels the most natural.

Clearly not every one thinks so…

The movement in Halo 3 does feel a bit slow, honestly for the MCC it goes like this for me: Halo 2A>Halo 4 (with equal loadouts)>Halo 3>Halo 2>Halo CE.

I’m sure Halo CE was some good stuff back in the day, but playing it now it seems like most of the players are goofing off. And no one takes it seriously.

It definitely plays different than the others, but I think it’s great in it own way. I’m not a huge fan of the bullet speed style of hit detections either. Honestly though, I think it plays a bit better now than when it launched just because more pedicel have better internet overall. It feels like the connections are slightly better.

I agree completely. I got my $60 worth of fun out of that game by early 2010. Now its back and unfairly weighted in the BTB playlist. Yes it is unfair and there is no way anyone can say different. Halo CE shares its slot with Halo 4 which means half the maps in the whole playlist only come up an infinitesimal amount of times. Likewise Halo 2 shares its slot with Anniversary which, while fun, plays differently enough that people will avoid one or the other.

Then we have Halo 3. The game with the smallest amount of BTB maps all but 3 of which are just 6v6 maps. It has the lowest vehicle diversity and to top it all off most of the game types are ARs. And don’t even get me started on Ghost Town being in the playlist. This game is unfairly weighted compared to all the others just like slayer used to be in all single game playlists.

So yeah sorry guys I love all the Halos, but I am not playing Halo 3 BTB anymore. I’ve played enough of these mediocre Big Team maps. I just quit Halo 3 games in BTB now.

Guess you don’t play in the CE playlist? Probably the most consistently competitive game type out there.

Its definitely slower than the rest but the MLG playlist fixed that and it played great. Default Halo3 wasn’t the best and was very slow, but MCC Halo3 is just a laggy mess and I have no desire to play it.

Except CE doesn’t use hitscan… It uses a projectile system just like halo 3. Halo 3 just has awful hit detection online. It’s a fact. The updated CE system is how halo 3 is supposed to feel but it doesn’t.

Posted this elsewhere but I’ll add my thoughts here.

There’s quite a few reasons why I don’t like halo 3.

First and most importantly, the hit detection online is absolutely horrible. The netcode breaks down under anything higher than LAN latency. You get blood shots all the time and sometimes you’re lucky to even get that. The lead distance is latency dependent and it provides the largest host advantage of any halo. Many pros have openly complained how bad the hit detection online is. Halo CE in MCC has a working projectile system that’s actually fun and skillful to use. I’m sick and tired of listening to scrubs who just say “learn to lead your shots” and have no idea what they are talking about. The system is just bad. You can’t argue it. “Leading your shots” works perfectly fine in CE with no one complaining.

The next major issue is it’s slow and clunky. It’s just not fun to play. Playing chess moves at faster pace. MLG even acknowledged this by increasing the movement speed because otherwise it’s slow, boring, and uncompetitive. The BR also has the longest TTK of any halo game slowing things down further.

The balance of vehicles is completely off. With slower movement speed, vehicles needed to be slowed down, this meant their weapon damage needed to be increased. Now they’re just slightly faster tanks. You can’t take them out with the BR because of the increased spread and awful hit detection. Your only option is a lucky stick, or EMP via PP or power drain, or the most over powered weapon ever created, the spartan laser. The entire sandbox is just awful compared to the other games in terms of balance.

Then there’s the increased BR spread. This slows down the game and most importantly, eliminates all counters to a sniper. Not only has the spread been increased, it’s also random. Sometimes it has zero spread and sometimes it has the worst spread imaginable. Randomness reduces competitiveness and makes for an inconsistent experience.

Halo 3 also ruined objective games. In CTF, your only hope of returning the flag is to camp on it, which leaves you completely defenseless. There’s no contesting and I believe no indicator to how close it’s to being returned. The new territories is just awful. The arming in assault is also just awful and not nearly as good as halo 2’s system. Then there’s also the automatic one hit melee with objective items. At least in halo 2 you had to do a jump melee.

Melee damage is also no longer momentum dependent, reducing skill gap. They also added bleed through which in my opinion makes the game less competitive and also goes against lore. It promotes AR charge and melee and body shots with the sniper.

Map design in halo 3 was pretty bad. It wasn’t halo 4 bad, but CE and 2 are miles ahead. Halo 3 only has like 3 good maps and even then, they play awful because it’s halo 3.

My two biggest problems with Halo 3 are hit detection and how slow it is, the pace is abysmal.
