Do I need the dlc to be able to play online?I’ve tried numerous times…it picks players and map…when it starts to load match either players leave or it boots me back to the main menu.
You don’t need a DLC to play online only Gold Xbox Live membership, what happens to you sounds as if you lag out of the games.
OP, this has happened to me several times in the past. It usually occurs when there is:
A. Very Bad Lag
B. Someone quit which the game had difficulty choosing a host
&
C. Your network could possibly be causing you to get kicked out of games.
My recommendation, try to connect DIRECTLY to the router, then play 2 or 3 matches, after than unplug the cable and play WiFi and play another 3 matches. If you get kicked out of the first game, then its your connection. If it doesn’t that means someone who was probably the host, quit which could result in a “Kick Out”.

Sounds like a strict NAT or a bad connection.
You should try to port forward your xbox. Check this guide for more information on how to do it.
