I’ve been contacting Microsoft support for the last hour trying to figure out how to play Halo 3 online with my Gold account, but nothing’s working. I’ve deleted and added my account again, restarted the console, and have done everything he’s told me. Lastly, he said:
“Okay, you could try to reinstall the game as a thought, or you could go to halowaypoint.com and start a forum based on this issue, unfortunately I’m not sure why it’s not working, on your account everything looks good, I managed to restart your live on my side and with removing your account and adding it back on it’ll fix the subscription as well.”
Is there anything that I can do?
Please ensure the following:
-
Ensure that you are the main Xbox Live Gold account on your Xbox One. If you are a ‘sub’ account, this has been known to cause issues when trying to play online on Xbox 360 titles
-
If possible, test your account on an actual Xbox 360 console.
Finally, is this the first time you’ve made an Xbox Live account? Did you have an active Xbox Live account during the OG Xbox or Xbox 360 era?
Just to be clear, we’re all Halo fans/customers here, we’re not actual customer support but hopefully between us we’ll be able to help you where we can.
Thank you for helping me as a fellow fan!

I’m not sure what this means, but whenever I turn the Xbox one on with this controller it logs me in automatically.

Unfortunately, my Xbox 360 is on the other side of the state.
I am using the same email & password with the same account name. However, when I first entered the matching lobby, it made me find my account and it was in the old-school Xbox 360 theme/style. The account must be the same though, as they have the same gamerscore.

What James is referring to is you being the owner of the account with the subscription. With Xbox One, you can have one account with a Gold subscription and every other account on that console will be able to access Gold features. However, this does not work for 360 games being played on One. So, say you had a friend you shared your Xbox with and he/she was the one with the Gold subscription and you didn’t have one. You would be able to play games like Halo 5 without any issues. However, you would run into issues with Halo 3 since that’s a 360 game.
Okay in that case, yes. I paid for the gold subscription on this account specifically.

Is this your first 360 game either on your One or in general by any chance?
There’s nothing that states you’ve been ban from playing, is there?
Also, when you say you’re trying to play online, what exactly are you trying to do? The original Halo 3 servers don’t have many people. The only playlist that you’re GUARANTEED to find a game in is Social Slayer. Everything else is either dead or close to it
Some additional things to try:
-
Open the Xbox 360 guide on your Xbox One whilst Halo 3 is running. On the Xbox One controller, you do this by pressing both the start+select buttons (I can’t remember what they’re now called). Navigate to the right and find your profile’s tab. Click on your profile. Usually your profile will have a Gold or Silver bar where your name is on your 360 gamercard, indicating the member status. This can help us work out if its an issue with your membership etc
-
As you are the main account holder, are you using a 1, 3 or 12 month subscription? I am not sure if the Xbox 360 had paid 1 month subscriptions so if you are using a monthly 1 month, provided the 360 did not have this, it is possible this may be why the game isn’t recognising it.
-
Have you played Halo 3 before? Check to see if your Halo 3 stats are syncing correctly. On Halo 3’s menu, press start and check your multiplayer stats, are they all there and correct?
I was about to suggest re-downloading your profile as well but of course, Xbox support has already recommended that. Beyond that, the only other thing we could ask would be what exactly does it say? What steps are you taking?
Example:
- Launched Halo 3
- Go to multiplayer
- (hypothetical error message) “One or more players does not have access…”
In my experience sometimes Halo 3 gives me trouble. What it does for me though is I’ll put the disc in and hit the square it’s in and it will open the Blu-Ray app and show me this old Xbox message that will say something to the likes of “Please insert this disc into an Xbox 360 console”. All I do is take it out and try again in like 30 seconds and it works just fine But I feel your pain.

Has the problem continued? Do you have any updates?

Please don’t revive old topics thanks
