Cant join any friends

So I bought this game on the xbox store on PC and my friend has this game on steam. I keep trying to join this game but every time I try to do so, it always says " joining failed your attempt to join this player has failed please try again". This has been really stressing me out for the last couple of days if anyone knows anything please let me know!

Yup, same problem with me. Can connect fine to multiple friends, but one of my friends who I connected fine with several months ago…I just can’t now. She’s on gamepass PC and I’m on Steam, and they just don’t connect for some reason. Same error message as you, been through so many hoops to try and fix but nothing.

Try adding that person to your Xbox Live friends list. 343i I recently changed the default “Friends Only” option so that it really only allows friends to enter instead of anyone. This has been causing havoc for the group I frequent for playing regular custom games since there’s now no “Open” option like there was on Xbox 360.

I could be misinformed. The Season 7 update is still very new. If this doesn’t fix it I’d send a bug report.

It sounds like it could be a NAT issue. You and your friend should check your NAT types. If one of you has a “strict” NAT, then you won’t be able to play with each other unless the other has an “open” NAT. The “Xbox Console Companion” app on Windows 10 will let you check your NAT. Simply go to the “Settings” tab on the bottom right, and then click on “Network” option. It will then check your connectivity to the Xbox Live service. If you’re NAT type isn’t “open” then you’ll have to change it, which there are plenty of guides online on how to do. If you both have an open NAT and it still doesn’t let you connect, then I have no idea.

I’m having the same problem, I play on PC and all of friends play on Xbox. I played with them cross platform all last week just fine. Now all of a sudden I keep getting this error message and it won’t let me join them. i have tried everything I know to do and can’t get it to work

Having the same issue can join a friend with the steam version just fine but a friend on the game pass comes up with “joining failed your attempt to join this player has failed please try again” when we try to join each other. Pretty disappointing from Microsoft.

Are all games and modes affected by this?
Campaign h1, h2, h3 etc? MP also?

This is about the lobby joining process where you group up before you start a match, so it affects all games and all modes. Queuing into matchmaking solo would be about something else though.

Ah, so the roster join? Hm, not sure then how to troubleshoot that other than try waiting in different menus and see if different menus work or not.

Its game version mismaatch. windows person has to update manually. was fix for us

Seems as though this is happening to a lot of people, regardless of whether you’re on PC or console. I literally have tried, countless times, to get a bunch of ppl in a group, but for some reason, it’s not possible for some, depending on your settings. I even tried to get 2 of us in the same house on 2 separate xboxes to group up, and it just doesn’t happen. I think some of the issues stem from how 343 setup matchmaking in a more recent update. I’m on Xbox series x, I have 1000DL/300UL with 0 packet loss and an average of 25 latency. Open NAT on the series x AND the secondary xb1x. Both gamertags were set to “appear offline” so I think that plays a big part in how 343 setup MCC groups.

Some examples of the issues tested with both xboxes… while both were in appear offline mode, we can successfully send party and/or game invites via the roster selection (x button to view game session) or using the invite button found just by going to the gamertag on our friends list and inviting to game that way, but it doesn’t work. The invites send, the pop up notifications appear for the opposite person, but when they’re selected, nothing happens. The whole process works, but it’s like once the person who accepts the invite clicks the notification, nothing changes, the game ignores anything happened and everyone continues on being in their own game. No one becomes the host, the game session tab doesn’t show the person who accepted the invite… the invite acts like nothing ever happened. Long story short…. Invites can be sent and even accepted, but the game doesn’t bother to do the final step and link up the people into the same game session.

Now, I think 343 changed a setting on their end to ensure anyone who’s appearing offline doesn’t appear on a friends in-game friends list, but they also inadvertently blocked joining of that friend even if you both know you’re online and wanting to play with each other. I think part of the “appear offline” privacy feature, they didn’t activate the feature that allows joining in offline mode, so you’ll still receive invites, just you won’t be able to join. I’m pretty sure this was something that was overlooked or it’s a bug, because once we put just one of the gamertags back to “appear online” and restarted the game, the online friend appeared on the in-game friends list, was able to send invites to the offline person, the offline person was able to accept the pop up notification invite and was also able to join the online person by hitting the X button to bring up the roster, selecting the online friend, scrolling to the “join” option on that person’s roster options and was immediately able to pop into their game session.

So it seems that if anyone has their Xbox settings listed as appear offline, the final step of just having the game connecting to each other once accepting the invite notification won’t work due to some sort of privacy feature/bug that 343 activated in MCC, probably to ensure ppl weren’t just joining up with friends even if they were showing as offline. This is something that likely affects other aspects of the join process and possibly creates issues with people trying to join each other
