Hi all!
I don’t have enough space on my internal SSD to install Forge. I’d like to install it on my internal HDD that I use for games/music/etc. However, when I try to install it to the HDD from the Microsoft Store, it won’t let me.
I select the Hard Drive from the Install drop-down menu, but when I click “Install” nothing happens. The button doesn’t change. The Store app will only install apps to my SSD.
Can some help me, please? I’d like to play some Forge; also I’m concerned that this will prevent me from installing Reach (which I pre-ordered).
If you haven’t already I suggest trying the following:
- Type ‘settings’ in your search bar, hit enter to open the app - On that app click ‘System’, then the ‘Storage’ tab, then ‘Change where new content is saved’. - Change ‘New apps will save to:’ to whatever drive you want to put your games/apps on. You should be able to switch the drives it saves to as and when you need.
It’s not the greatest workaround but the MS Store is… iffy at best.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I’ve already tried this, but it makes no difference. The store still refuses to install apps to that drive.
Actually, updates across the board are frozen. Windows Update and the Windows Store get stuck in a loop whenever I try to update/download anything. I’m sure this is a problem on my end, I just wish I knew what was up.
I only recently added this M.2 SSD into my laptop, previously I had been using the 1 TB internal HDD. Ever since I’ve done that and gone with a fresh install of Windows onto the SSD I’ve had no end of problems getting permissions to access my own files on the old HDD, admin rights, long download times, internet hanging, and that sort of thing.
I was able to get it to work - that’s a relief. Unfortunately, I can’t really give exact steps as to what I did. In between it not working, and the time that I tried it and it worked:
-
I cleared enough space on the SSD to install Forge by uninstalling Halo Wars 2 (easily the biggest thing on my SSD). Note that I still succeeded in installing Forge straight to the HDD. I watched my drive usage during the process, and it seemed like the Microsoft Store used the SSD during the install, but then moved the program to the HDD. Strange. Anybody reading this, try clearing enough space as though you were installing to the SSD.

I restarted a few times while cleaning up my SSD.
-
I uninstalled OneDrive and Skype, killing their processes. Turns out they were running in the background and using up plenty of bandwidth/resources (I use neither of these programs).
-
I ran Microsoft Update. Turns out I had a couple of Intel driver updates waiting.
Finally, I’ve got space for Forge and HW2.
Hopefully when Reach comes out, I can try something similar. Moving Store apps (via the Windows 10 Apps and Features control panel) has started working again as well.

Thanks for showing up to help, btw!
