Can't enjoy this game with friends new to Halo cuz of sbmm

Title pretty much says it all. I tried to introduce my new friends to halo infinite, their first halo. After some games sbmm kicked in and due to our skill gap they keep getting absolutely blasted when they play with me, btb, quick play, any mode. Now they dont want to play anymore cuz A: if they play with me they dont have fun due to the bulldozering from the enemies or B: they dont want to play without me.

In my opinion there shouldnt be sbmm in casual modes like btb/quick play. Many Friend groups will get divided due to skill gaps . I never had a skill based matchmaking that agressive, than in halo infinite.

I bet they don’t complain when you play against a team and you guys win? Stop crying and deal with it.

I have no idea how the SBMM works in social, so I don’t really have anything meaningful to add.

Losing happens and you can’t win them all, I guess?

Halo always had skill-based matchamking, even in unranked playlists. It’s just that ranked was more aggressive in ranking based on skill.

We all dont care whether we win or not, I even tried to play “bad” on purpsoe for the sbmm to calm down for the next game but it is no use. Everytime we play together they get absolutely demolished. I can understand how it is absolutely no fun to them. Losing is different to eating dirt 24/7. Losing a close game is cool, getting bulldozered because of a skill gap in a casual playlist isn’t

If that’s how it works then it should be fixed.

Not an argument, cope with the fact that SBMM is terrible outside of ranked.

To everyone that wants to know what usually happens with skill based matchmaking I’ll give a simple explanation. The numbers are not a real representation, so take it with a pinch of salt it’s just to explain my point.

In ranked, the system may look for players close in skill;

30, 30, 25, 33 vs 29, 28, 27, 35

Combines the teams skill levels would be 118 Vs 119. The game is very balanced and so are all of the players.

In social, the system looks less aggressively and tries to balance the team within a range, the players don’t matter as long as the teams are even. It is also loose so one team may be higher rated than another;

20, 25, 20, 20 Vs 45, 5, 10, 10

This would equate to 85 Vs 70. As it’s social the system doesn’t need to balance the teams as closely, but still within its metrics. Now the 45 is going to have an extremely easy game because they are playing people who are much worse but everyone else on their team is going to have an awful time playing the game.

Playing with worse friends can be extremely difficult, although I’ve found Big Team to be a nice place to go for this. Just doesn’t work as well in smaller playlists. I’m not sure there is a good solution. When I play with my bad friends we stick to BTB.

This is such a great comment, thank you very much for your input! I tried to play BTB with them as well but while I am more advanced in game time and being a veteran halo player even in BTB they get demolished. At this point I dont know what to do. Have fun alone? Reverse my sbmm and ruin matches for others so I can play with my friends and have fun? Right now none of us are having any fun.

Have they played alone? I think the way big team battle balances there will always be a large skill variety in the game which means more skilled players will often be around picking off those new to the feature. So the experience for them may be somewhat similar even without you.

The only advice I can give is if I play with my worse friends, I tend to baby them a little. I will follow them around, help them secure kills, power weapons and vehicles. We always run for Warthogs and swap who drives.

Yeah I hope there’s only a system for that in ranked when the full game comes out. Right now it feels a little broken.

I hope so. This game tries so hard to be beginner friendly but the second 2 beginners have a skill gap one will be severely trashed by the enemies. I
