I’m not sure if anyone’s brought this up before, but is Grifball canon? Pre-Halo 4 I’d say no, but it’s part of War Games, presumably as a sort of relaxation game for Spartans, so the UNSC must be aware of it and from there it’s possible it’s a widely known sport.
What do you guys think?
There’s only one sport in the Universe during that time frame.
It’s called Grifball!
But truthfully, I don’t think Grifball is considered canon. It was made famous by RT and thus is the only reason why it’s in War Games. Just to be plain fun.
There’s a Grifball field in the opening scene of Forward Unto Dawn.
Totally canon.

This is true.
I am pretty sure it is canon but was heavily modified by the Spartans themselves.
I could imagine the original Grifball was 4v4 players, the ball did the same score but instead of weapons they were just themselves. Someone had the brilliant idea to add a ranged melee weapon for agility and offer new strategies. Thus a bow was given out, then rumours of Chief and Brutes using a Gravity Hammer surfaced, thus the popularity of it grew tenfold. It got so famous and wanted that almost every Spartan wanted to use a Gravham but the only way to get one was to kill a Brute Chieftan. Thus they saw the oppurtunity in War Games and said, “F*ck it why not”
It doesn’t matter what universe you are in
or who you are
Because GRIFBALL! IT’S CONTAGIOUS!
if elites cant be in the game as a player character due to canon they better say it is or give me my elite back >:(

I demand an image of this.
On the back of the action figure package of the Recon Grifball Spartan was a writeup about Grifball being a sport as an in-universe explanation. Clearly it was thought out.
The UNSC official name for the sport is Gravball which can be found in the book The Fall of Reach. Grifball is cannon.
I’d like to think it is canon.
Don’t worry about people actually killing each other with Gravity Hammers and Energy Swords because it is a simulation.
