Given the latest information on Fireteam Raven, I was wondering: what sort of rules are in place that dictates the secondary colors of certain ODSTs? Fireteam Raven doesn’t really line up with what was shown in H3: ODST, with the Blue secondary being used for team leader (which Romeo was very much not) and Orange being used for Recon and not Heavy Ordinance. Likewise, Heavy Ordinance in H: Raven is shown as Green and Explosives as Purple instead of Red.
Do these sorts of uniform decisions just depend on the individual unit’s preference? Or is it decided at a Command/ship level?
We dont honestly know. I dont think canon has said a single thing about it. If I had to guess though its probably based more on the soldiers personal preference. In the real world spec ops groups get a lot of leniancy in how they operate and what they use for gear (see; SEALs in Vietnam) so perhaps that same operational freedom has advanced into the 26th century?
We don’t really know anything about ODST color regulations save that they are a lot more lax about it than the marines and army.
We know however that they are allowed to decorate their gear. Some ODST possess emblems and can have a colored “mohawk”. Visor color can also be different among ODST, Spartan, and ONI operatives performing ODST operations.
It’s probably a case by case basis as Bungie never addressed it. The overall build of an ODST suit however remains consistent, but coloration likely depends on soldier preference. Being that they seem as lax about it as the Spartans are, they probably have similar regulations.

Makes sense. Seems a bit off though that the military would be so relaxed about uniform modification that they’d allow people to paint their suit purple, sort of defeats the purpose of making the rest of it black so they’d blend in. After all, ODSTs don’t really have the luxury of energy shields that SPARTANs do.

In the case of Spartan operators (and Spartan ODST operatives) it may be that they have the defense so that it matters less if they are in bright colors. We know earlier Spartans exhibited a uniform green and a consistent shade of darker colors if allowed different ones. It could be argued that as technology advanced the uniformity on special operators matters less and less because in the case of Spartans, we know they could use cloaking technology and a hail of gunfire and plasma weapons isn’t going to slow them down that much.
But in the case of the general ODST they do have better gear than the average marine. Not as great as Spartans, but they are designed to survive large falls and hits that kill the average soldier. ODST’s are also not really deployed in large groups, large quantities yes, but you’ll see more individual squads than a battalion of them rolling over the hill. Coloration would be a little less important than the squad identifying operatives and coloration allows them to do that quickly without a helmet.
The UNSC does however seem to be a bit more strict regarding marines and army though with them getting outfitted per mission than having their own suit.
