Canon lore for Overshield and Active Camo in CE?

Does anyone know of or if there is lore for when Master Chief picks up active camo or overshields in the Halo 1 campaign? Do you think they are just there for gameplay reasons and therefore not canon?

If no actual lore exists how would you incorporate it into lore? What are your theories or explanations?

Probably just equipment they pick up but because of the constraints of the original xbox you had to put them as a red Square and blue triangle

Yeah I just kinda view it as equipment, like in H3. I consider them to be the older counterparts to the invincibility and active camo equipment you can pick up in that game. This doesn’t explain why these were missing from H2, but as far as CE goes, that’s my head canon.

Active Camo is definitely referenced in The Flood novel so probably easily explainable as Elite equipment that Chief is able to make use of as above posts have suggested

I see maybe why the camo was removed from halo 2 because the arbiter can use it, but not having overshields was weird

Yeah, basically I take it as tech Chief is able to leverage to his advantage on his suit but because it’s not made for his armor or power supply it is only temporary. I’d almost call overshields the equivalent of the Gold Zealot shield technology.

Considering the fact Sgt Guns (I believe that’s his name, the training marine gearing you up in Halo 2?) talks about your Mark V gear being basically fried (‘lets not even talk about the power supply’), that’s probably a good indication that the Master Chief possibly fried his systems trying to utilize the Covenant technology such as overshields and active camo technology. Seeing as the suits wouldn’t be able to handle the amount of energy the equipment needs to function, it probably shorted out several of his suits critical systems from prolonged use, even if it was only once or twice. Cortana was likely the only reason his suit didn’t straight up short out the first time he used it as she would have been able to micromanage the power fluctuations to allow extended use.

That’s honestly what I think, not sure if it’s true.

That’s actually a pretty good theory. Hell, even in the book First Strike it mentions Dr. Halsey using experimental upgrades on some of the other Spartans including an accelerator that doubled the shields for one of them. Basically a permanent overshield.

In the case of the Covenant tech though? It’s probably why each overshield pickup only lasts through the first initial charge and why camo is temporary. No mention of these pickups in the book The Flood though.

Yeah, the toll they take on the MJOLNIR power armor even in later generations and iterations must be heavy as even the Arbiter can only use cloaking for so long in Halo 2. However, that’s due to the armor being so old (you know, I wonder how they even keep getting that armor back. How often have they lost Arbiters out in the field and had to recover that armor I wonder? At some point, you’d think someone in the Sangheili armory section would just make a new set or upgrade the current set), so if the armor of Arbiter’s passed can’t sustain it for long, then that means their armor is generations beyond MJOLNIR.

Tad off-topic but they do craft new arbiter armor for each one to don the armor. We see seen various types, from ancient ranger, to golden, to the perm camo type that the arbiter from halo wars, Ripa 'Moramee wears.

I always thought of them as just covenant equipment that happens to be compatible to MJLONIR armor, especially since you had invisible elites and those gold elites that must have been equipped with an overshield because their shield was so much stronger than the red and blue ones.
Also you could find overshields on covenant drop ships that boarded the UNSC while the crashed pelicans had medpacks, so yeah I just considered them to be covenant equipment.

They are Covenant equipment, however it’s very likely that they were not completely compatible with MJOLNIR grade armor. We had the test version Mark V and VI armor in Halo: Reach which was supposed to be able to utilize Covenant technology such as Active Camo. However, it’s very likely that the only reason the Master Chief was able to use the equipment left laying around by the enemy was because of Cortana. She very likely was able to micromanage the suits systems just enough that he could get a small use out of the camo and the overshield.

The Camo only lasts a little while, likely because it requires a lot of power. Without Cortana, Chief’s suit would have probably been toast and he would have been left vulnerable (which, I think would have added an interesting twist to the game, requiring you to be far more careful until you could get armored up again, but because of how expensive MJOLNIR armor was back then, it would probably have made little sense that they just happen to have some spare Mark V suits laying around for you to get into).

However, the overshield manages to retain full charge of a 3x’s shielding but does not refill when you take damage. This is also likely because of the immense amount of power it takes to super charge Chief’s shielding system. (also it’s to note that the overshield never recharges and in future games it even slowly degrades even without taking damage)

well that would explain why AC is only temporary and once OS is gone it is gone. But again the elite equipment makes the most sense lore wise.
