So I purchased Awakening the Nightmare last night through the Microsoft store - however it does not allow me to install the game and in fact tells me that this app does not work on this device. It only gives me the option to install it on xbox - I spent nearly 2 hours with microsoft help desk trying to fix the issue - we’ve retried restarting my pc, refunding and repurchase, and again refund and repurchase but thourgh the halo wars 2 game on my pc. Also when I load up the xbox app on my PC it only shows halo wars 2 under games, no DLC and when I try to load the DLC through halo wars 2 ingame it directs me to the microsoft store to download which again tells me I can install it on my PC only on Xbox.
Microsoft help desk gave me a link to this site and the number for the developer who are closed atm. They agreed i do indeed have the PC version and they do not know what the problem is.

32gm ram @3200mhz
EVGA Geforce GTX 1080
Also they just tried refunding me my original halo wars 2 game and DLC so I can buy the complete edition which is the bundle - that didnt work either.

I can’t get it to work either. I click on it in the game, it opens the store app which then tells me I already own the game and to enjoy it and sends me back to the game…where it than opens the store app …and tells me I own it and to enjoy…and sends back to the game…….and so on AAAAARRRRGHHH

I just worked it out. Start a new campaign (don’t click on awakening the nightmare - instead click on new campaign), and then it will give you an option to start a new game with the campaign, or the ODST DLC, or the Awakening expansion.
Is this issue still present?
I’ve purchased the expansion today and it won’t install it. I’ll try restarting it, don’t really want to reinstall the game as I’m on a download limit!

That worked! I think the issue is that everything else in the menus is technically just an ad. They shouldve made it so they dissappear once you purchase the DLC.
