Cannot connect to Multiplayer

For some strange reason, when I press A on multiplayer, I cannont play it. I try to connect to a friends game, and I still cannot play it.
Why?

Do you get a message when you try to play multiplayer?

Happens to me a lot as well. When it happens I just go and get on a different game.
