Quick rules with this post.
- This is not about Controller vs M&K (Mouse and Keyboard). If you wish to debate that, find another post.
- If you have not played Halo Infinite on Controller and preferably on Console, please find another post. (Reasons for this will be explained)
Quick Summary: I believe the Halo Infinite aim assist on Xbox is not working as intended. Aka, the aim assist is not working for many console players, myself included.
Expanded: Before people begin dismissing my claim without listening to my points, I’d like to ask the console controller players if they’ve noticed the distinctive lack of aim assist and overall horrible aiming in Infinite?
Yesterday, I went back to Halo MCC to play a few games of Halo Reach. I 100% recommend that you try this as the aim assist in Halo Reach, H2A, H4, basically every game on MCC feels like there is aim assist. My aiming was back to being consistent, it felt much easier to snap on to my opponent and keep my reticle on them. In short, it felt incredible to play.
Today I’ve gone back into Halo Infinite, and it feels like I’ve got absolutely no aim assist whatsoever. The game feels absolutely awful to play, and as my friend describes it “It feels like a bad PC port”.
The aiming in Infinite feels absolutely awful, and I genuinely want to know at this point if it’s just a bug for Xbox, or if this is how the aim assist is meant to feel. I do understand that desync could be playing a role in this, however I don’t believe it is entirely desync. I’ve gone into solo custom games against bots and the lack of aim assist is still very apparent, and I also could not replicate some of the clips streamers have claimed to have whilst playing on a controller on PC.
But anyway, I don’t want to repeat myself too much. Has anyone else noticed the same issues?

This video explains why the aim is different in Infinite. In case you don’t want to watch it, basically in Infinite aim assist doesn’t kick in until you are aiming directly at the player. In previous titles aim assist kicks in when you get your reticle in an elliptical zone around the player.

Could you send the link to the video? I’d like to check it out.
When I was doing tests, I tried having friends move around Infront my reticle to see if they could make my Spartan move. In the tests, even with the BR, it would not move whatsoever with me standing still.
I could only get my reticle to move if I moved left and right, however this was so slight that it’s barely worth mentioning.
I could also get my reticle to track when moving the reticle. However the aim assist is so low that it again was barely noticeable and non-existent with certain weapons.
I should’ve clarified on my previous post as well to avoid any questions about skill. Back on Halo 5 I was a Onyx player who would routinely go against Champ level players. I simply never had the time to commit to get to Champ. In Halo Infinite, I’m almost constantly pitted against Onyx players. However, in some games it feels like I have 0 aim assist whatsoever. It’s to the point where I can jump (which completely removes aim assist) and not feel a difference in gameplay.

Yeah the biggest issue is the change in when AA starts. It only works while you’re on target and it’s easy to overcompensate and pass right by or drop off the enemy at which point you have to recompensate and try to get back on target. It’s bad.
As for “it feels like a bad PC port” yes I agree it does. Considering this was developed for 3 1/2 platforms it’s not impossible that they developed infinite on PC at a base level and then moved things over to X1, Series X and S. Halo 5 forge had these fingerprints all over it. You could just see and feel the terrible controls on console that just really hammered it in that H5 Forge was developed on/for PC and then had terrible console controls slapped on at the last minute. And I swear if 343 does this again I’m freaking done. I tried for over a month to adjust to the changes in controls for 5 Forge, but they felt so unintuitive and everything was so buried in menus that I just couldn’t. I also don’t have a PC capable of running H5 Forge so that’s not an option. So if this is the same for Infinite then I’ll never enjoy forging like I did in 3, Reach and 4.
I really love Forge and I just want to be able to do that again. I’ve not been able to enjoy forging in a new Halo title since Halo 4. That is an absurd amount of time. I don’t want to toot my own horn or anything, but I was a pretty good forger back in the 3, Reach 4 days. It was probably the thing that I did best in Halo. I think I just want that back and in order to have it I have to be able to use Forge.

AA only working while you move is worth mentioning. When you’re sniping or trying to line up a ranged shot you want as little influence as possible so you can properly hone in on your target. With the movement speed still being relatively high this makes aiming harder and if you need to be moving to properly do this, it just makes it even harder.
I’ve definitely felt like it’s not present at all after the latest update.

desync and poor connection plays a big role as well. i got games where it almost feels like an aimbot and then there are games where the reticle goes all over the place and feela like when you are trying to ahoot your teammates.

I haven’t personally noticed any changes, but I’ve had some controller turmoil with my Elite 1 being lost to RS drift and my replacement having tighter aim. But before my Elite 1 died there were no changes.
Shoot! I’m sorry
Here it is:

Yes the aim assist has been toned WAY down for Infinite compared to older titles. It is best to spend a lot of time in those weapon training modes to get used to it. If you jump right into multiplayer without practicing you are going to struggle for quite awhile as getting used to the new aiming against other players is tough.
I’m only about 8 minutes into this video, and the man is talking straight facts!
Thank you so much for this. It basically confirms the issues I, and my friends, have been experiencing. I believed I could see the issue when revisiting Halo Reach, and I’m incredibly glad I made a post asking others for their experiences.
Again, thank you for the video!

You know, this is actually somewhat funny when you think about it.
Before, if you played against Bots in 4v4, it would raise your skill level to such a high level that the game was unplayable.
Just think about that. For practicing at the game, you’re punished by having to go against high level opponents
I am not taking about the bots. I just used the actual training range.
I range between mid-50%s and low 60s in ranked (primarily the BR) on controller. And that’s including me pre-firing/laying suppressing fire. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Sure, the aim assist is noticeably weaker than in previous Halos but it just increases the skill ceiling. That is a good thing. Everyone is dealing with the same amount of aim assist. Yours isn’t any weaker than anyone else’s. The assault rifle is a good alternative for players who struggle to aim the Sidekick, BR, and VK-78.
We’re not talking about how much of an advantage someone has over someone else here. It’s more about how this AA feels inconsistent at times and doesn’t feel very good at all for people on controller.

I don’t like the way the assist feels, but it barely works anyway for me on PC, so in a way I’d rather it wasn’t there so I could have at least one consistent thing about the aiming. The other problem I get is the aim sensitivity curve deciding it wants to be super sensitive/like a mouse.
These two videos by Critical Infinite explain why the aiming in Halo Infinite feels so bad (subjective) compared to other FPS:

the part 1 aim assist is the same video that GODZILLASbro117 was talking about before. thanks for posting the follow up too. this is very helpful for explaining to people why AA in Infinite feels so bad.

The only way I found to compensate for (What feels like zero aim assist) is to play on slow settings

Anything higher feels like my controller is set to all 10’s and feels impossible to gain a consistent aim
strange. Have u tried using a controller on PC to see if the same occurs. If that is the case it might be just the game and how it feels to you. I have used controller and mnk on pc and both works fine on my rig. Not sure about xbox. Hope u work it out!

Neither am I. My point was clearly that nobody had an advantage over anyone. You are struggling to accept that Infinite consistently has weaker aim assist than past titles. And that is a good thing. We don’t need everyone running around on controller aimbots. These fake videos are just bringing in subs and likes by duping people who have fallen behind the back in actually learning to aim with their thumbs for the first time in Halo history.
