18m just isn’t enough. By the time it reads anything, you’re already pretty much dead. The slight glow doesn’t let you (at a glance) determine where someone is relative to you.
It’s a core mechanic and promotea strategizing engagement. This isn’t a major fix or an overhaul either. It’s literally a toggle and you can see it in custom games.
What I’m wondering now is when does it go from “they’re busy with bigger issues” to “ignoring this until people just accept that this is the radar”.
For those who don’t like the radar, that’s fine. There are playlists for that. There’s no reason to make it so useless that it may as well not even be in the game.
The optimal range is 24m (90% in customs). Don’t believe me, get friends into a custom game and see how much better the game plays when you aren’t dying due to being completely blindsided.

Oh I fully agree with all of this post.

I actually like it better in this game. Previous games it felt like in order to be sneaky, you were forced to slowly crawl around the map at a snails pace. Because the instant you tried to run, everyone knew where you were and would hunt you down. Trying to get away from people was also a pain, because the tracker let people know where you went even if they couldn’t directly see you.
The radar in this game feels like it gives enough information to you on your general location without making tracking a complete joke to do. People that want to beat bum rushers by out smarting them have a better chance doing it with this tracker.
It’s far from useless too, like I keep seeing people say it is.
Halo isn’t a sneaky game. And in this game, the Active Camouflage hides your movement from the motion tracker when used so that should counter your “I don’t wanna have to CRAWL to be sneaky” argument. The motion tracker range is way too small to tell you anything that you don’t already know about 90% of the time.

343 I’m pretty sure in one of their updates during the last flight they even said they were going to change it or at least look into changing it which makes me wonder why it hasn’t yet since it is such an easy change. The game says 18m but it always feels more like 5m when someone almost directly in front of you doesn’t show up on radar (moving mind you).
100% agree with OP and I feel your pain.
That’s the point though. If you want to be sneaky the trade-off is speed.
Running away from a fight should be punished. Halos ttk gives you chances to turn battles in your favor, not just run away from them.
There are gamemodes for people who aren’t fans of the radar in general.
I acknowledge your opinion but I completely disagree. The bottom line is: there was nothing wrong with the radar as it was.
You either played a game with it or without it. We don’t need a half-measure and inconsistent bandaids when majority of what people are saying is we want it the way it has been for 10+ years.
The feedback was the same during the flights and 343i gave us “a compromise”. It’s still unliked and they’re ignoring it now (seemingly) because perhaps in their eyes they already fixed it. They didnt.

They said they would look into upping it to 22m in BTB only.
22m is still too short (try it out in customs) for arena so I have very little faith it will do anything for BTB.
A bigger issue I have with this is it’s an inconsistent experience between game modes and that’s awful for learning the game. You shouldn’t have to adjust your awareness depending on which radar you have because of which gamemode you’re playing.
Turning it off is one thing (that’s the ranked meta) but having two different ranges will ensure you’re never fully used to one or the other provided you play both arena and btb.
It’s super frustrating because every few days I pick it up and try again and after a few games I’m over it. The radio silence compounds the issues.

Active camo is a power up that’s not always available. It’s not like I have it available to me whenever I need it.
People have trouble adjusting to it because they’re used to always knowing where the enemy is before they even see them. You can’t just bum rush everyone like a neanderthal with this one or you’ll get played by people who are good at outsmarting people. People have to actually think a little bit now instead of acting so blindly.
It’s completely the opposite because now because you can literally rush people because unless they’re already looking in your direction, it’s an easy kill.
Unless of course they are on k&m which is a different topic on why we should have IBMM
With the old range, you could have enough information to know if you should charge into a room or look at different options. Now it’s nothing more than a guess. There’s not strategy in hoping a room only has one person in it when you run in.
