Halo games have always had good enemy AI. But I can’t help but feel it’d be better if the enemies almost never just stood out in the open, and actually showed some semblance of self-preservation. With each Halo game, the AI has gotten better at taking cover and flanking, especially with Halo 4 and Reach. But I feel the enemy running away and hiding or actively pushing your position shouldn’t be an occasional event. It should be the norm. The Promethean Knights were pretty good at this.
I want enemies to pop in and out of cover to get pot shots off. I want them to run away and actively avoid the player when injured - and when it gets desperate for them, and you’re about to find them, they surprise you by charging at you. I want them all collectively push on your position, and break me out of my comfort zone (Firefight AI is good at this already, put it in Campaign). I want them actively surround you. I want them to show an awareness of the player, sneaking around them, and attacking from the side or behind (Halo 4 has sown the seeds of this behavior).
I WANT the enemies to be realistically smart. Because it tells the player that they’re going to have to ascend to a higher level of thinking than just running and gunning. It tells the player the game isn’t just messing around. The smarter an enemy is, the greater the player will feel when overcoming them. Thus leading to an overall more satisfying, and complex experience. Doing this would serve to give Halo more depth as a shooter. Besides, the Covenant are the ones who are usually on the offense in canon - why are they on the defense so often in gameplay?
My point is, let the enemies show MORE initiative, and self-preservation than what we have now. I feel looking towards The Last of Us for its enemy human AI is a good start.
Reach and H4 have some issues with the AI that bother me. If you pop an elite’s shield off, they throw their hands up in the air and throw a tantrum whereas in previous halo games they would instantly dash to cover. They need to bring back the Halo: CE elites that bob and weave and juke you out. Halo 2 and 3 elites are okay, Reach & Halo 4’s are garbage.
Hunters are great in reach & H4 though.

they do both run at you or cover in reach and H4 I don’t know what you are talking about…
also just a good thing to know to us, read the halo reach image
Yes.
Halo A.I has only ever devolved. Halo 1 A.I was great. So great that after a few months of Destiny, normal difficulty was wrecking me. Granted, much different mechanics and and a double in frames had something to do with it…but it’s not like Elites just stood still like they do in Spartan Ops. “HEY MAYBE IF I BODY CHECK HIS BULLETS HE’LL GET SCAR—BLARGGUSFDHGF”

Well… the Elites were good and the leaping Rocket Flood were terrifying. The Marines? Not so much. I’ve found them them throwing frag grenades at banshees (which ironically killed me when they bounced) and they had an amazing tendency to commit fratricide while driving Ghosts.
I’d love to see some variety added. I don’t want to be able to predict what the enemy is going to do. We’ve slaughtered the flood and covenant so many times already that it’s getting a bit dull. If they just added some randomness or variety to the enemies, that would change gameplay significantly.
