Can We All Just Calm Down About The Rankings?

Honestly I don’t get why people are getting uptight about the ranking system. Does everyone really care about a number next to their gamertag? I just read a post saying that someone is basing their pre-order on the ranking system. If they didn’t like it, they would cancel it. That’s just about the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. Do you guys honestly think that hiding a rank will break the fun in the game? It’s just a stupid number, get over it and have fun for once. That’s what games were meant to be, FUN. Games are not made to become a way of life in which you base your real life skills on a rank in a video game.

TL;DR - Hide the rankings, match us up with even skilled players, HAVE FUN WITH VIDEO GAMES!

PS: I’m sorry if it sounds more of a rant, but seriously guys…there are more worries in a video game than a stupid ranking.

because playing halo without ranks is boring

> because playing halo without ranks is boring

Weird, when I play Reach I have just as much fun as I did in Halo 2 & 3. I remember when I played Halo 2 and would get matched with people that were 10 ranks higher than me, it instantly killed the game for me from the get-go. It was just a defeated mentality I had and that’s not what I want from a game. I want a game to be mindless fun, which is what I found in Halo: CE and Reach.

> TL;DR - Hide the rankings, match us up with even skilled players, HAVE FUN WITH VIDEO GAMES!

Pretty much this. I don’t see what the big deal with ranks is all about. Maybe it’s an insecurity thing, people want to feel important, they want to compare themselves to others to feel better (or worse) about themselves, I don’t know.

I do know, however, that the ranking system is not nearly as important as people feel it is and that it’s certainly not worth the amount of trouble and fuss that its currently causing.

If you need an incentive to play the game, well… the rest doesn’t need saying.

Yes. Reach lacks a proper ranking system, and I am unable to have close matches ever. My average day of Reach matchmaking consists of roflstomping randoms all day. I never get challenged, and the only time I am not roflstomping is when I am the one being roflstomped. A lot of players like to know where they stand as a player, and working to get better against other players of a similar mindset. Reach lacked a lot of this replayability.

Long answer short: to some players, ranks will make or break the game, and for a lot of players ranks are fun. Achieving a high level or even seeing your evolution of a player is fun. Don’t tell me what my fun is.

I have no idea where I stand as a player, and with hidden ranks in Halo 4, I still won’t. I won’t know if I am steaking 40a, or being rolled by 30s, or vice versa.

If you do not care about ranks, I have a really simple solution for you:
Don’t play ranked! I don’t beg for the removal of social.

Some people play to just enjoy the game man, I sure as hell don’t need a rank by my name to have fun in a game.

You can thank Bungie for the lack of the matchmaking formula. Just because your rank was hidden, doesn’t mean that’s the reason for your unbalanced matches.

Weird. I don’t have fun in Reach.

Please stop stating your own opinions in such a way. Other players have fun playing for ranks, if you cannot understand that, it is your own problem. What makes you more important than me?

You can have your mindless fun, play social. Don’t ruin my experience because you are mad at the game telling you where you stand as a player.

That’s cool. Some people like to have a rank; rank gives players an incentive to win, an incentive to try. I don’t make threads asking for the removal of social. You can keep having your fun.

Still does not solve me even knowing remotely where I stand as a player.

Some people have low self esteem if they take pride in things like that…
Who said anything about social playlists?

No need to turn this thread into something personal.

Successful or not, Halo has always tried to support both audiences in the past because they are important segments of the community and I don’t see Halo 4 being any different.

I do understand why some people are a bit worried about the ranking system as it really has been talked about yet.
It is important to respect that a portion of the community find competitive rankings to add to the fun of the game. They find high stakes competitive gameplay exciting and fun just like you find the more social aspect of Halo to be exciting and fun.

Yeah, every single player that wants ranks has no self esteem at all, makes perfect sense. Being prejudice is wrong.

Well why should social players have what they want if ranked players can’t?

Why separate the playlists? Keep it like reach and just more accurately match similarly skilled players together.
You don’t need some ‘ranked’ playlist to do that

Because some players don’t care about playing for a rank. Also, it is much easier to run Social Slayer with in-real-life friends who aren’t on my level than it is to lose my rank because they can’t compete with who I am matching with.

So?
There doesn’t need to be any visual representation of your skill whether it be 1-50 or BPR as long as it matches you to people on your level in the end.
Can’t believe you’d pick a video game rank over playing with friends

I agree. If rather have a nice smooth game that plays great than have a bad game with a ranking system.

But it seems that they should have thoughtabout the ranking system a long time ago.

I can. I wouldn’t do any team-based activity for something of value with teammates who are not able to compete at the level of my opponents. This is why I play social with them.

But why doesn’t there need to be a visual representation of skill? Why not hide K/Ds, Win/Loss, progression rank, and other players in your game? It’s not like they exactly matter. As long as it matches you to people on your level in the end.

Exactly. Ranks have always been a part of the fun of Halo.
