Can the Marines/friendlies not be as worthless

Has anyone noticed that the friendly AI in Halo games has been getting worse and worse since halo 3?

The marines in Halo 1 served some use as a distraction in Halo:CE and could actually kill things on their own.

The marines in Halo 2 where upgraded with better aim and fire rate and actually took cover. Even on legendary, they forced the enemy AI into cover making it easier to progress through the level. The elites were beasts and walked through the flood/brutes like butter.

The marines/elites in Halo 3 were a step up and had better tactics and aim. It was actually a firefight even on legendary and really added an epic experience. It felt like an actual battle was going on instead of the Master Chief babysitting the whole time.

It all went down with Halo Reach. The soldiers in Reach were a huge step down and were almost useless. They could hardly hit anything unless they turned on you. They died in 2 hits. They couldn’t drive or operate a turret at all. They just couldn’t do a thing. No wonder Reach fell. Even the Spartan ai was terrible with the exception of Jun and Jorge. They were only good for being bullet sponges and distracting enemies.

Halo 4 is where it was the worst. I mean the marines in Halo 4 are so awful. They don’t even move for cover. They just crouch in one spot firing 2 or 3 shots regardless of the weapon until they die. They can’t hit anything further than 10 feet and die in 2 shots. How did that happen? I refuse to believe the humans were able to beat the Covenant with that kind of tactics. Even the spartans, the best of the best, were a huge let down. I was so hyped to see them in Halo 4 as allies and thought they were going to wreck shop. Instead they were just marines with energy shields that died to grunts. How are they going to have Elites who fire the Carbine,Fuel Rod, Concussion Rifle like miniguns with precise accuracy and yet the spartans can’t hit anything with a DMR. They are absolutely worthless.

I get that the AI isn’t supposed to carry you and I like the challenge. What I hate about it is that it really ruins the immersion in the game when the marines are like monkeys with guns. I don’t get how the AI somehow got worse from Halo 3 to Reach to Halo 4. I really hope 343 steps up the game with the friendly AI in Halo 5 or campaign is going to be incredible annoying. I can not tell you how disappointed I will be if the AI for Locke and John’s squad mates are as worthless as the AI in Halo 4.

They talked up new behaviours and tactics that the Ai’s employ to combat the four-man spartan teams of the campaign - think this was in the sprint? So yeah it’s something they’ve definitely been working on.

But I do agree and wish the marines especially weren’t so flat footed.

It’s one thing to increase difficulty by buffing an NPC’s raw health and damage percentages (diablo 3, destiny), and another to actually add new behaviors, make them react faster and be more deadly by simply being smarter instead. The latter is MUCH more preferable but they can work in conjunction quite well, if it’s JUST a flat damage/health boost it gets pretty lame pretty fast.

When it comes to Legendary, allies always seem to fall to a few shots so I wouldn’t pin too much on hopes that they’ll prove useful. I hope 343 proves me wrong on this.

Idk, for me in Legendary, I would bring marines/elites pretty far through the levels with me in Halo 1-3. They would either die towards the end or reach the stopping point where they don’t progress any further. Give Halo 1-3 a go on legendary again on the 360 and you will notice the difference. Idk what is wrong with the marines in the MCC version of halo 2 but for some reason the port totally broke some of the AIs.

I agree with the health boost becoming lame. That was the main thing I hated about the Promethean Knights. They were just bullet sponges, especially in solo Spartan Ops while possessing the capability to teleport to you and one-shot you in a variety of ways. That isn’t fun, it’s just cheap.

I think marines should have low heath but they should make more damage and use cover often.

They only useful when they on warthog turret
