Can’t open because it is offline error(MSFT store)

Hi, I have been getting this error “Halo: The Master Chief Collection can’t open because it is offline. The storage device might be missing or disconnected.” often out of nowhere. I got this error yesterday and it says to look in Microsoft store. When I go there it says the app encountered an error and to reinstall.

I did this YESTERDAY. Today I go to play the game and the error comes up again. I’ve had this error occur at least 5 times already in the past and I have not been able to find a freaking solution. This is frustrating as the only solution is to completely reinstall a 70GB game over and over. I downloaded it from the xbox game pass app on Win 10.

I have exactly the same problem :frowning: and it happen with all the games i downloaded

I just said f it and uninstalled it after it did it AGAIN today. I bought it on Steam and will not buy any games from Xbox game pass or MSFT store ever.

I same problem. When I redownload (reinstall) Halo itr works until I restart PC

Than I have: “Halo: The Master Chief Collection can’t open because it is offline. The storage device might be missing or disconnected.”

I have tried repair and reset app, run WSReset.exe - no joy.

any ideas?

I found another topic but no solution:

I too have received this message: Halo: The Master Chief Collection can’t open because it is offline. The storage device might be missing or disconnected.
What action should I take to remedy? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Who monitors this Forum? Is it users only or do the manufacturers offer solutions?

Question, did you originally installed MCC on an external drive?
MS Store uses c drive as default.

Try this, go to:

  • storage settings (on your pc) - scroll down to “Change where new content is saved” - Click “New apps will save to” - Select C drive, apply. - Then re-click your external drive and hit apply. - Close menu.
Launch the game and see if that worked.

I hope I’m getting closer to at least a temp solution. Posted this in the other thread.

Put in a ticket. @W1lddogg you jixed me, SOD2 started doing the same thing as well. Gears Tactics (Game Pass) and MC Dungeons (Owned) are fine though.

UPDATE: So I may close my ticket as this is starting to seem like an XBOX app issue.
So far I have just done my tests with SOD2 as it is the smaller game, however I unistalled the XBOX app and used the Windows Store to redownload the game, started it up, rebooted and lo and behold it was still working upon login. I am testing again installing it on my game drive as my C drive is dedicated to windows and I don’t want to keep games on it. Ill report back again after I get a little more testing in, and of course test MCC.
Summary: SOD2: Uninstalled Xbox App, installed to C: using Windows Store, survived a reboot with no issues. Trying again using my game drive (D:) and see if I get same results.
MCC: Pending as it is a bigger game.

UPDATE 2: So I think W4R was on to something. My install of SOD2 on D: did not survive a reboot, however, without doing anything in the store (repair/reinstall) I found my default install location in Windows Settings. It was set to D: so I changed it to C: then immediately back to D: and the game launched. Still need to do a reset and see if it bugs out again, but at the very least this might be a simpler temp fix.
Summary: SOD2: Change to D: did not survive a restart, but changing then changing back the install location got the game working again.
MCC: still pending

UPDATE 3: Does look to be Windows related NOT Xbox app or game related. A reboot borked SOD2 again, and again a quick move to C: then back to D: solved the issue. Again not ideal, but much better than redownloading anything.

MCC: Downloading now, will give one last update

UPDATE 4 FINAL: Yep, MCC was acting the same way but the trick that was first mentioned by others (also here https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/forums/85d779d52cfd46918b4f8b638f2e3c7b/topics/solution-found-for-mcc-not-launching-after-restart/702ec981-3934-440e-b6f6-aa92b034285a/posts?page=1#post2 )
works, safe to say it a windows issue…closing my ticket with support.

TLDR: if you have this issue and the game is not installed to C:, go into your default save location in windows settings, change from what drive you are on to C: hit apply then switch right back to the desired drive and hit apply, you will be able to play. annoying but a quick fix.

Have you had the issue since you switched to the steam version??

Seems to be the right track, it got rid of the error message and made me redownload/update xbox game services in the microsoft store. Might be that another program is whats causing this issue in the first place.

Looks like I just solved this issue. Looks like it happens when you have multiple hard drives and want to install Windows apps on the hard drive that does not hold your OS. Windows tries to handle this by: 1.) Saving the files to your secondary hard drive, and 2.) making them accessible from a hidden volume that, unfortunately, is not “mountable” and therefore, when the system restarts, the drive becomes unmounted and the game cannot be found.

I was able to find and mount the volume by:

  • Open Command Prompt as administrator - Type the command mountvol - You should now see a list of volumes. Multiple will say something like *** NO MOUNT POINTS *** . One may be the EFI, another recovery, and it also incudes our game files. In my case, the game files were the 2nd volume with “no mount points” - Type *start \?\Volume{…-…-…-…-…}* (of course, replace dots with the Volume number you are testing) - When you select the MCC Volume, a folder will open with the game files. - You can now run Halo: MCC from the shortcut in your start menu, xbox app, etc.
I have no idea why Microsoft is bundling their games like this. This is the first resolution I have found for the problem, so hopefully this gets patched up sooner than later.
