I am not new to Halo. I am not totally hardcore or anything, just a casual gamer, but I still know enough to get by. That being said, I am beyond frustrated with matchmaking games in general. How is it that I can empty an entire AR clip into someone and they still have their shield, yet someone STRAFES me with just a few rounds from the SAME GUN and it totally annihilates me?
Every forum I’ve checked says that there is no benefit to the higher levels of armor except looks and that there are no damage bonuses or anything added as you level up. If that is true then what the hell?? Surely I can’t suck THAT bad. I had a guy pummel me ONE time and he ran right through me (one shot pummel kill). No, it was not a beat down or assassination. He was running up a ramp, I was running down, we were facing each other and I had full shields and full health, and BAM!! one hit and I’m DEAD. WTFFFFFFF??? Or better yet, playing Big Battle I have a guy headshot me with a DMR from halfway across the freakin map while I was bouncing around in the back of a Warthog! HOW?? I can take ten seconds to line up a shot and hit them right between the eyes with the DMR from 100 ft and they will just run at me and kill me.
I guess my basic frustration is that it feels like it’s really REALLY easy for me to die and hard as hell to kill people. Is there some kind of damage table tilt that I don’t know about? I’m not going to say that people are cheating, but is the skill gap REALLY that wide? How do you make a gun outperform its counterpart just because you’re the guy holding it and not some other dumb schmuck? I’m at a loss here. I enjoy playing Halo matchmaking, but right now it just depresses the life out of me because I feel like I might as well just run around empty handed and try to hump people to death for all the good my weapons are doing me.

Have you been playing the Title updated games? That might explain a bit…that or some lag issues…
Well, you could just be missing your target, other weapons are more accurate then others like the DMR is much more accurate then your standard AR, if so try placing shots with the DMR you may find the the odds stacked closer in your favour against AR using combatants.
OP: If in the Assault Rifle scenario you and your opponent were any more than a few body-lengths apart, and he was burst-firing while you were just holding the trigger, then I’m afraid most of your bullets were missing while he was keeping his shots more tightly-packed. In Reach the Assault Rifle’s very first bullet in a burst is always dead-centre and it gets less accurate from then on. Short, controlled bursts, my friend.
(Or ideally, use a better gun - assault rifle sucks).
The skill gap in this game isn’t as wide in this game as it was in previous Halos but it is still there. This is not a point and shoot game like some other fps’s and you have to gain knowledge to what works and what totally fails in this game. People that have been playing even a month longer than you will know some little tips that help them get kills, and there is usually a reason you die. Sometimes there are lag issues but unless you see people skipping all over the map it shouldn’t be too big of a problem. As you said, additional armor doesn’t do anything besides add looks. The most likely cause of your troubles is that you face people with a better understanding of the game and you get outplayed. Nothing wrong with that, just gotta build up your own knowledge of the game.
> Have you been playing the Title updated games? That might explain a bit…that or some lag issues…
Title updated games??? What is that? And lag MIGHT be a possibility as last night I was playing and actually doing halfway decent but there were still several, SEVERAL times that I could see noticeable lag i.e. sticking someone with a plasma grenade and watching it hang in midair before streaking away after the person to whom it was attached. Weird, too, because I’ve never had that happen before.
I actually got paired with some pretty good people last night who were at or near my skill level and both me AND my wife were getting more kills with more consistency than we ever have. Of course, there were still the occasional one or two players who were like Hero class or Noble class and of course they would just mop the floor with everyone but eh…I can understand THAT. What I can’t understand is a friggin Captain Grade 2 wrecking shop on everyone from the total n00bs to the Brigadiers and Generals.

What do you mean by that? How is joining now any different than joining, say, six months ago?
Oh and I’ve had an Xbox for over a year now but have only had LIVE for like six months. I work and Xbox is my letdown time. I have only recently started playing matchmaking in Reach, though, as the birth of my son and other life issues kept me from getting online much…that, and GoW 3 came out and I spent a considerable amount of time playing that so Reach got shelved :D.
> Well, you could just be missing your target, other weapons are more accurate then others like the DMR is much more accurate then your standard AR, if so try placing shots with the DMR you may find the the odds stacked closer in your favour against AR using combatants.
I like the DMR but I’m afraid I’m not the best at keeping my crosshairs steady on the run. That’s why I tend to lean more towards the “spray and pray” type of weapons…and probably why I also die a lot come to think of it.

I used this method last night with MUCH better results. Basically I was firing the AR like it was a single shot weapon and it helped to knock down overshield at the very least so I could catch them with a solid right hook and finish the deed. Thanks for the tip! Got any more? I know that every blankety blankin time I get a blankety blankin sword I end up running at some yoink! who is like 20 feet away and I hit the trigger and NO lunge…just the sound of me dying to a headshot or some crap like that and then the always irritating sight of seeing said yoink! pick up my hard-earned sword and running off with it to use it with great effect as a weapon of mass destruction. WTFFF?? I swear I just have the worst luck ever with this game.

I have been very impressed thus far with the quality and sincerity and overall just niceness of the replies I’ve received…and this one is no exception. I was seriously expecting to get trolled by all the more experienced players. I’m SOOO thankful that the first response to this thread wasn’t something like, “Nah dude Reach is awesome you just suck.”
This is a very well thought out and helpful response. Most times there IS a reason why you die, but sometimes you gotta admit you’re just staring at your lifeless character going WWWWWWTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFF??!!?!??!?!!?!?!?!?! (Happens to me a LOT sometimes). I’m learning more and more and starting to put my analytical skills to work finding hidden weapons and such. Lag was a minor issue last night but I still did better than I ever have. Thanks for the post, I really appreciate it.

Firstly, try to edit your replies into one post rather than multi-posting.
Secondly, ranks like ‘captain’, ‘hero’ or whatever don’t have any bearing on a player’s skill: they just show how much a person has played - they’re ‘experience’ ranks.

Well, it’s complicated.
343i did what’s called a ‘Title Update’ (or ‘patch’) which introduced some new or altered mechanics to the game. Problem is, they aren’t implemented across-the-board: some playlists include the changes, some don’t. BTB doesn’t include the changes, but the playlists in the ‘annviversary’ category do: and the picture is actually going to get more complicated next week.
One of the big differences that might mess you up is that ordinarily, you can’t kill a person with a melee until their shields are down, but with the title update, if their shields are weak enough, you can. This is known as ‘bleed-through.’ So with TU games, you can get killed with as little as 6 AR bullets (?) followed by a melee.
I understand, I don’t really like both AR or DMR I find them boring, and just your ‘‘everyday’’ weapon, the fun really begins when you find something that goes KABOOM!! or Fires a few rounds then KABOOM!! yeah either way, or just run people over I don’t know Ha!

Inspired by the community who can’t adapt and are crying for changes. I’m not completely against the update (85% Bloom), but I think the TU changes that are a little more drastic (Bleedthrough, Zero Bloom, etc.), should never be applied across the board or even out of Anniversary.

Yeah I was just reading up on some of these changes and all I can say is “Wow…seriously?” Anybody who gets THAT into online play needs to seriously get a life. I have a family, a full time job, and responsibilities to attend to that seriously limit my play time. When I DO get online, I want to be able to HAVE FUN and BE ENTERTAINED. I don’t play Halo so I can be some ubermensche dominating force that makes everybody else feel like a pawn in the palm of my hand.
I just want to play with other people who like to play also, who are in it to have a good time, and whose idea of a good time is that ANYbody can win…but what I end up getting most of the time is a bunch of people who are either innately gifted with superpowered FPS skills or have just spent waaaaaay too much time playing and have things they do just out of habit that make them Halo gods. I don’t like playing with people like that.
I mean, come on, what’s the point of playing something to “relax” if you go to bed frustrated and upset because no matter what you do to have fun in the game it’s not fun because somebody is taking a huge dump all over you every time you turn around?

The people who get THAT into online play are essentially the reason Halo exists and ever got as big as it did…
Some people (myself for example), i go to school full-time, have my own apartment with my girlfriend, have a decent paying job for still being in school, and i still find time to be really good at Halo. At 21 years old i’ve been playing since CE came out… And Reach has a much lower than average Halo population… that’s why people complained, but Reach is not a good Halo game, if you’re new to the series, yeah you’ll like it, that’s who it’s catered to. If you joined during Halo 2 or earlier, you’d understand this a whole lot better =p all you’re going to find left of Halo in it’s current state are people who are sticking with it ONLY because they love the franchise, and people who are new to halo like yourself and thus not very skilled(no offense). Once you get a little better, you’ll start doing the same thing people are doing to you, it’s how matchmaking in this game is set up, Bungie’s exit strat included removing Halo from their competition… that is, until Halo 4 comes out.
“Sniping” warthog gunners and passengers isn’t that hard with DMR…
> gifted with superpowered FPS skills or have just spent waaaaaay too much time playing
Some people learn faster or are simply more skilled.
Is flaming people the best you can do. Because you are just bad? You blame other players because they are just good? Crying here makes you look like a little kid. Every game has a learning curve. You cant expect playing one match per week or so and dominating all players. What do you want. A rocket launcher as a start weapon?
If you want some fun play Action Sack or learn the basic mechanics of this game.

There’s your problem, any weapon besides the DMR, Sword, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, and Rocket Launcher isn’t worth using in this game because it has been terribly balanced. Regardless of how you use an AR or Plasma Rifle, it will hardly ever work except if you get the drop on someone (at which point a single melee from behind will do the trick) or the person you’re fight completely -Yoinks!- up.
So, you can either force yourself to play this game in a way you’re not comfortable with because you, by chance, do not to fall into the one or two playstyles that the original game just so happened to favor (and have thus been preserved throughout this self-justified franchise), or you can play something else (which is what I recommend. What you are experiencing is what Halo has to offer. It is not simply teething troubles, it’s rotten game design though of course I can’t go so far as to recommend what you should play instead, since I don’t know what else you might prefer.)
