Can someone give me some strafing tips?

I’m no good at strafing anymore. I see people in the TU do it all the time. I try it but I end up dying. It works when I play Halo 3, but not Reach. Can anyone give tips on how to improve my strafing?

Don’t play Reach.

JK but Reach’s movement system is slower than Halo 3 and probably why you’re having trouble. There is a slight delay when you change directions, so short strafing doesn’t work. My advice, longer strides and practice. Go to Theatre after a game in which you do poorly and watch from your enemy’s point of view.

Alright, thanks for your help!

short strafing can work as well, but it has to be very fast.

another key to strafing is being random, and unpredictable.

for example, using the ‘SK STRAFE’

this:
left, right, left, right, left, right

is worse than this:
left, right, left, right, CROUCH, left, left.

keep in mind this is done as FAST AS POSSIBLE.

Because of momentum (some call it movement acceleration), it is best to jump or crouch when changing direction. Not always, always. As said, be unpredictable. But also remember that when at your 0-momentum moment, you’re prime for someone who is pacing their shots with a red reticle with your movements rather than moving their centre reticle to match to keep their bending bullets ahead of the strafe.

So as said, you have to add in an extra movement to offset the opponent’s tracking when shifting directions often enough.

This one is surprised. Strafing in default settings? lolololol

The best you can OP is try to be unpredictable and never do the same thing twice to the same players you are going up against.

Beyond that, Reaper and Urza hit the nails on the proverbial coffin.

Don’t do it?

Strafing is a crutch which only benefits those that can’t reliably give themsleves tactical advantage (since the sort of fights it helps you win are just those which have you fight on equal or inferior footing.) Don’t strafe, focus on better tactics, and perhaps pick it up later once you’ve developed into a better player on more terms than simply how spasticly evasive you can be.

So what do you have someone do when you come face to face with an enemy? Stand still? Run in a straight line at him? Strafing is a legitimate strategy, and especially in ZB gametypes where accuracy is rewarded. A good strafe can mean the difference between life and death. Sorry, but I dont even begin to understand what you mean by a ‘crutch’, as i have never heard this ‘argument’ of yours before.

Strafing IS a tactic. There is no better tactic than strafing.

To the OP:

  1. Work of making your shots count. Unfortunately, reach does not reward a player for consistnt head shots, so 4 body shots and a head shot is what you wanna go for. Work on your accuracy until you can effectively 6-8 shot people(ZB gametype) or 6-10 shot people(Non ZB). ALWAYS Spam with your dmr on ZB and non-ZB. It has been proven that spamming beats pacing more than not.
2)Use your radar, and grenades. Pretty self explanatory, throw a grenade right before the enemy comes around the corner. You basically wanna use this to your advantage as often as possible. If you are not in a radar gametype, make sure to SHOOT your enemies rather than throwing grenades at them. I dont know how many times ive had teammates going for meeles or grenade kills when the enemy has no shields.
3)Now work on strafing. Once you consider yourself decent with grenades, and consistent with the dmr, work on your strafe. I usually mix up a long strafe with an sk strafe, with a crouch worked in. Just be unpredictable and dont be repetetive.
Other notes: Pistols in 85% bloom and ZB are godmode. Pacing with the pistol in 85% bloom will beat a spammed dmr if you 4sk them, however a spammed pistol does have the potential to beat a paced one.
Just shoot, don’t rely too much on grenades or meele. I only meele when ABSOLUTELY forced to.
    Hope this helped.

people that say strafing is gone in reach must also agree that ninja kills are gone in reach.

They are not gone, just need to be rethought and remaneuvered. For ninjas, get on a platform that is at an incline, or suddenly jump when being sprinted after and jump to the back left/right.

Strafing is similar, for strafing try starting an attack with a jump from behind a wall followed by: left-right-left-right-left at an optimal speed that will require practice and time in halos “theater”. Your left-rights must be timed precisely so that you are not moving predictably or not moving at all.

I find strafing to be very easy in hr because most people just are conformable with statements like: “it cannot be done” and they dont even try to strafe. Practice makes perfect so just work on it. Although I think an optimal movement speed would be 110% jump/movement, not to make strafing easier, but more effective.

lol strafing is a crutch? And I’d imagine shooting is a crutch too. As is not AFKing? Or breathing for that matter?

ye i lol’d when that guy said strafing is a crutch

As for strafing tips, Practice in a custom game look at your feet and see analog movement it takes to move left and right.

I understand what your saying but you explained it kind of confusing.

If you end up face to face in a pentagon situation strafing can be a deciding factor in who wins so it is important to learn.
But I think ‘Duncan Idaho’ was trying to say if you get the high ground or power weapons or something to give you the advantage before you face your opponent that is a lot better then just learning how to strafe and going head to head with everyone.
And his right but strafing is still important(and I’m glad strafing has become less important in Reach)

so let me get this straight, you believe charging INTO the enemies bullets is better then say, dodging them?
