Can someone please explain to me why 343 would design the majority of the maps around vehicle use, but then allow every single spartan to spawn with a plasma pistol and up to THREE plasma grenades?
Seems kinda counter intuitive IMHO. I honestly don’t understand it.
Anyone else think that they should limit the amount of starting plasmas to 1? Or change the tracking of the charge shot? Cause right now it’s all like “Oh hey here’s a gorgeous map with all sorts of vehicle routes, but here’s the catch, every single spartan is going to be able to take you down easier than if you were on foot”
> I usually stay away from people and allow my gunner to rain bullety death upon them. I’ve never really had a problem with grenades. :I
I always try and keep my distance, but it seems like the minute you push up there’s someone waiting around a corner ready for an easy stick.
On the flip side of that whenever the enemy is in a hog you know what goes on in my head “Oh yes, here comes a double or maybe a triple” shouldn’t it be more like “Spartans, look out, take cover, they have a hog going around. Let’s co-ordinate to take it down”?
I favor only allowing one sticky on loadouts. This is something I had a problem with in Reach as well. Stickies are a guaranteed kill against infantry if you stick someone and can destroy an entire Warthog just if it touches it. Frag grenades on the other hand take more skill and the only advantage to them is that you can bounce them off walls… It is really hard for me to fathom that two different developers cannot realize this, nor how dmr’s, br’s, and snipers shouldn’t be able to wreck heavy armor plated vehicles…
> It promotes balance, or else vehicles would be unstoppable.
I do still have nightmares about standoff on H3 when the enemy gets the laser and 2 hogs.
But still, it went from one extreme to another. I just don’t know why they designed like 80% of the maps around vehicles, but then made vehicles useless
The biggest issue is the plasma pistol, at least a stick on a moving vehicle requires some skill.
I like the idea of ditching the plasma and boltshot as secondaries, and having automatics as secondaries. The boltshot and plasma can then be ordnance.
2 issues fixed for the price of 1, less plasmas to disable vehicles and less OP boltshots.
I think it makes complete sense. everything in this game requires a counter. Whats the counter to vehicles? EMP. Whats the counter to EMP? Wheelman perk. Obviously some are hard counters and some are soft counters, but changing loadouts to counter the enemy team is how you ADAPT

Wheelman is actually really nice in BTB when operating vehicles, but it still doesn’t deter from the fact that PP + Plasma nades off spawn HARD counter vehicles AND you spawn with them.
Actually the balance is not the issue for me. My problem is that 9/13 maps are designed around vehicle use, and yet vehicles are useless. So why design the majority of a game around something that is actually useless. So we have all these great vehicle maps, but the player spawns ruin the idea of driving vehicles, and on the other hand, the on foot gameplay is absolutely great, but we have only 3 maps that focus on it.
TLDR; Need more arena maps, if we are gonna play vehicle based maps at least let driving vehicles be worthwhile.

Getting in a vehicle in Halo 3 was fun. You could get in a hog or tank and get on a nice killing spree. Like Frank said you could own a map with it and it was a great feeling. There were still ways for a smart player to take down a hog, though. Plasma pistol and stickies usually spawned in bases, there was a rocket pod on some maps, laser and rocket on others. Every map seemed to have a good balance of counters to the particular vehicles that were on it.
Halo Reach added dmr and sniper damage to vehicles, i guess for balance purposes but really to me it just allowed for vehicles to get shredded by a team that knew how to dmr and imo took away some of the fun of getting in a vehicle but you could still do some work with it.
Halo 4… ugh. They keep the dmr and sniper damage and allow people to spawn with stickies, plasma pistols, and invisibility. And on top of that almost every map, contains tons of structure around fairly tight vehicle routes, making it even easier for someone to wait behind a rock and just pop a poor warthog with a sticky or plasma pistol as it goes by. Aside from the sniper these are counters you get to spawn with that already limit the usefulness of a warthog. Add to that ordnances, and vehicles are pretty much a deathtrap right now.
I would really like to see a return to some of the vehicle play of halo 3. I have some fond memories of reigning terror on other teams on Standoff and Sandtrap. Those were fun games and I couldn’t wait to get in a vehicle. In Halo 4 i cringe at the thought of getting in one. Some things I would do to promote more vehicle play is limit sniper/dmr damage, buff vehicle armor, limit plasma pistol or stickies in loadouts. Hopefully 343i implements some changes.
I Really think limiting plasmas off spawn to 1 would be a great start, and wouldn’t require and actual patch. I don’t understand why we can have 2 stickies but 1 Promethean, stickies are undeniably more useful than Prometheans, and allow for MUCH easier kills on vehicles and players.
Hopefully when 343 does some analysis they’ll see the numbers of players spawning with plasmas, and how many kills against infantry/vehicles these plasmas are causing. When you compare this to the kills against infantry/vehicles that promethean nades are getting, you’re sure to see a MASSIVE lop side.
