Can someone explain to me how matchmaking works?

I’m a diamond and a level 144. So can someone explain to me why i’m consistently getting paired with unranks, platinums/golds, level 30s, and second accounters, or a combination of those when i’m on focused preference? thanks.

I believe unranked players have less restrictions than ranked players in search so its possible, or they could just be people with diamond last season who are unranked now.

You may be getting Platinum and Gold players if the game cannot find enough of your rank type, it will widen the search to those below you. Do you at least one other diamond? or are you the only one?

For rank, does nothing when it comes to the searching. you being 144 is your Exp rank, has nothing to do with the skill ranking in arena.

You should read Josh Menke’s feedback threads which are linked below. He explains a lot about the ranking system.

MMR I think it’s called, it’s like a hidden rank that you have (in addition to your normal rank… onyx, gold etc). It’s basically how well you have played the last few games, it dictates what players you play. So although someone may be gold 4 they may be doing well and that’s why you get out with them.

take what I wrote with a grain of salt, I’m pretty sure though that is roughly why this happens.

Ever heard of MMR?

If you couldn’t find a game within 30 seconds, then ‘Focused’ doesn’t really work. Also, the system “tries” to balance the teams out, but it’s not a perfect system.

This is the best advice in your thread OP. Dr. Menke has been very transparent regarding matchmaking.

Yeah basically according to Josh, your teams MMR will be similar to your opponents team MMR, unfortunately you find the having 1 good player and 3 trash players can have similar MMR to 3 average players and 1 bad player, in this situation the Good player will most likely lose as the 3 bad players will be out skilled by the average players, unless the Good player pulls a major carry. The MMR matching in the this game isnt the best for solo players unfortunately as your expected to have a full team when going into ranked.
